Hi all

I have just removed a fuel tank from a mini that has not been used for 5 years.Unfortunately it has been stored in the weather and the tank now contains 10 litres of very old contaminated petrol with some rusty sludge around the edges.

Does anybody have any good ideas on the best way to clean it out to see if the tank is still useable.

Thanks

Handfull of stones or ball bearings in there with some detergent and hot water give it a good agitation and a couple of goes if necessary. Rinse out with clean water - I then used a bit of acetone to get the water out and dry it off ( leave it in the sun a bit ) Pour in some rust convertor and slosh it around, pour off the surplus, let it dry in the sun again then pour in some Kill Rust or Por15 and tumble it around to get a good coat then drain - Nicely treated and painted insides of one petrol tank

When all finished, stick a small twist drill into the breather pipe at top of tank and wiggle it to clear the hole. otherwise the petrol she not run out...
BTW it'll no doubt block the strainer on the outlet pipe. Stick a twist drill in there and hit with a SFH, to break the mesh. Then fit a fuel filter in the line.
