For that price don't expect a "bolt in and run" condition. They will all be "restoration needed condition" only. You can buy ready to run engines for anywhere around the $1000 mark (most likely over $1000).

But when you think about it, $1000 aint bad, if you buy a $300 1275, you probably need to rebore it +20 thou, new pistons, new rings, new head gasket, then while the head is off you'll want to port it, maybe bigger valves, maybe high ratio rockers. All this is certainly alot more than $300!

Then comes the braking issue...

Consider it to cost around $2000 give or take $500 if starting with a mini with drums all round, including tuning and ancillaries like carbs, alternators, dissies, radiators the lot... Once you're done with that, you will notice that 21L in the left tank is not enough for a thirsty 1275cc  That amount depends on the state of tune of the engine

IMHO

the best way is buy an old 1275 (better if you can buy the whole car and hear it running) for a couple of hundred bux. As long as the gearbox seems Ok it's really only the engine you need to do up.

I did this about 2 years ago and had the whole engine rebuilt, bored out to 1310, a pair of reconditioned 1 1/2 SU (though 1 1/4 are just as good) all new bearing the works. Just gave the gearbox a slight freshen up, brand new clutch, had it painted in green and the engine bay detailed. I took the car in with a crappy 998 in it and two weeks later drove home with an as good as new 1310 that ended up seeing heaps of track work and never gave me any trouble.

Total cost from go to whoa about $3,000 but that was everything.

I saw an "as new" race motor on ebay a while back for $2,000.00 but who's to guarantee it is "as new" at least if you pay to have one built you know what it has in it.

See pic here.

And before anyone picks me up on it - yes I know the attached pic has twin 1 1/4 inch SU carbs the 1 1/2 pair came a little later.

Oh yeah, it also depends on how much you can do yourself and how much you can scrounge for el cheapo parts

Like a new 13 row oil cooler for $25

But I agree with Oz, if you're gonna spend $2000 then get it done yourself, at least you know what goes into it and what state it's in!

The joy of a mini is that if you send sensible money on Engine gearbox and Disc brake front end if needed. You know they can be transfered into another shell pretty easy if needed. So its not like you are spending money on one car it's really a good investment for years of trouble free motoring for years to come.

Well that's the theory anyway.

Keep your ear to the ground.. I may have a complete 1275 (with 'box) in the next few weeks.... not going in the Brick, but for sale.....

For some reason they converted the gearbox to sit in a boat ( ) and i remember the vague impression of silastic........

But I'm pretty sure the long block is fine... will post pics as soon as i have it in the shed....

Its probably virgin and open for offers......
