That is the question.

Has anyone driven or now of any one with a 5 speed and if so what sort of problems have they had if any.

I am looking at putting in one when the devil gets stripped after August this Year.

Do they have the same gear ratio as a normal 4 speed then have the extra 5th gear or is the ratio all different from word go.

I reckon a 5 speed would be great I don't know if they are worth the cost though they are supposed to be pretty damn expessive even in the UK.

As far as I read there is nothing much transferable from a 4 speed box to a five speed so given that I figure they probably designed all new gear ratios as well to suit having 5 speed boxes and also because they are possibly trying to cater more towards race cars

that's my 2 cents

or just the cooper specials

rover built a limited run of 5 speed cars and they had a lot of waranty claims never to be done again and this was on standardish cars
so i would not recomend a 5 speed spend the cash on a 4 speed c/r straight cut dog box with a 3.44 or if you want the lower rev's in top get a 2.95 ratio from pomgolia

From what I have heard all the 5 speeds gave various problems.
Chief among them is putting power continuously through the layshaft bearings when in 5th gear. These are just not designed for this. Compare a Mini bearing setup with any european or Jap 5 speed and you will see what I mean.
I'd save my money. Get an SCCR 4 speed, or....
KC has developed a sequential shift Mini dog box in UK which should be the dog's bollocks. Will be released soon.

to be honest dont bother Rover ditched the idea, to many warranty problems, JACK KNIGHTS are crap I have seen three fail and word is they are getting a lot back, mate just got one rebuilt and they are taking it back again still no good this is the third time its been built, its a genuine Rover cooper sport 5, (not the one is Aus), there are may returning to John Coopers too as they was a dealer now they stopped adding them as feature too, due too poor quality, look think and ask some people on UK boards before you buy, those guys use and abuse there cars, ask them there good test pilots, the ones I know of are loved and well cared for cars and they still have broken!!!!!!

Most of the 5 speed road boxes added 5th gear into LH side of the box near the diff pinion, in a variety of ways.
Dog boxes fit them all in the normal place, as there's no synchro cones, there's room for the extra gear. 8)
KG Engineering (now belly-up) in Melbourne built a 6 speed dog box, I think the miniman (Matt Read) used to use one.
