Post subject:  Steering rack to body - foam?

Hi all
Have just replaced the steering rack & fitted the subframes, & someone said that there is supposed to be a foam bit between the steering rack & the body. I have the plastic strips in place between rack mount bolts & body.
Is it where the steering rack pinion goes through?
Is it between the steering column & floor?
Is it foam or rubber?
What dimensions?
Is it really needed?
Thaks

I think it was Doc who recommended the disc retainers you get off the blank CD/DVD spools.

I did this on my car as well, I used two..

So, how thick is the foam before its compressed between the rack & body?
Should it be foam or rubber?

The CD spindle bits are the right diameter and hole size is perfect but they are thinner than the original 1/2" so either build them up or I am thinking of cutting a slice with an electric knife off the end of one of those swimming pool spagetti floaty things - have a spare one in the garage roof doing nothing. They are only meant to keep the dirt and water out.

I used a circle cut out of high density polyurethane foam... was about 1/4" thick.
