Hi,

Just been playing under the mini and noticed one of the outer CV Boots has split.

The inner joint is the type which has u-bolts (I think).. and the car has 7.5" disc brakes.

Whats the easiest way to replace the boot...? can I just disconnect the inner coupling and slide the new boot on? Or is it more complicated than that? I don't really fancy taking apart the front end of the car (again).

The car is going in for RWC in the afternoon today, so it's bound to be picked up then, so would like to get it sorted on Saturday/Sunday.

Also which boots would you recommend.. I noticed Lindsay at minis plus has silicon ones, $29 for 2, with grease and metal straps..

I think we need a how-to for this! :P

Tim.

just did mine in dec - this is what I did about and hour a side
- wheel off
- drum off - if drum braked
- remove nut and split pin that retains the hub
- remove hub
- disconnect ball joints
- disconnect steering arm
- diconnect brake line
- remove entire brake and hub assembly
- remove drive shaft from spined flanged at the cv end
- replace cv boot

play backwards to reinstall everything - add top up and bleed brakes

You can actually remove the shaft from the car with the bottom ball joint still attached.
I usually disconnect teh top arm after i have loosen the nut/ washer.
Then remove the inner joint/pot joint/hardy spicer.
Disconnect top BJ
Remove CV nut/washer
Remove shaft
Install new boot

Re-Insatll paying extra carefull attention to the shaft going back into teh hub/drive flange.

It is a little more fiddly doing it this way but it means you dont have to remove the whole hub assy hopefully.

do you mean you removed the driveshaft from the outer CV joint?

there should be a circlip at the end of the driveshaft that makes it just about impossible to remove the shaft without damaging the CV and/or breaking the circlip

When putting the engine back into the car and the drive shafts are separate- do you add the drive shafts to the motor then fit to hubs or connect to hubs then fit the engine end?

likewise to what I said above, it takes a bit of a knock to get the driveshaft into the outer CV joint, and sometimes a bit of fiddling to get the circlip to line up. I put the CV in the vice and pop the driveshaft in, then assemble the front-end

half way done, taken plenty of photos...

got the shaft out.. is it the norm to leave the CV joint attached to the shaft, and slide the new boot over the splined end? looks easier than knocking the cv joint off the drive shaft thats all...

oh and is there any way to clean the CV joint as it's been run for a while i guess with the split boot.. can i just degrease, wash out, dry, and then grease it back up with the grease in the kit?

thanks for the advice thus far!

once again, couldn't be done without ausmini.

eww greasy keyboard.

Did you end up doing a How To for this? I see nothing in the How To section :?:

don't think so, but all the details above will get you through the job if you need to do it, then you can have credit for the how to ;)

regards to your signature, 6' 1" is a bit short to be driving a mini, 6" 4' is better ;)
