Hey there.

Im in the brisbane area and am about to commence a rebuild on my mini.

What parts should i replace and what should i do to the engine while its i pieces? Can anyone suggest where i get these parts from?

Also being such a beginner at mini's, how can i tell what engine i have? The car originally came with a 998 but my father has suspicion it may be a Cooper S motor.

All help will be much appreciated.

Best to post up the prefix of your engine number. That way we can identify it better.

As for the rest, it will depend on what you have now.

No offence intended here but--> anyone writing a book about minis 30 years ago may not have experienced such worn or stuffed-with components as we are finding these days.

I started my rebuild being told - "fix the brakes and a new battery and she'll be right" - 7 years later I think I have undone every nut and bolt - at least it is now going back together. Just be warned - "one thing leads to another"

Yep, been there! My build started originally as a drop subframes and rebuild brakes, then re-install into another shell and drive away.

I've also found I keep changing my mind about stuff. I'm currently on my third engine, third set of brakes, third type of interior, third set of wheels, etc.

James, be kind to yourself (seeing as you're a mini beginner ) and stay in contact etc. with Matt the Mini Man. Experience is one of the essential ingredients in the recipe to making a mini !!!

So... yeah. I have no idea of the history of the engine, when i got it, it wasn't running, but it is these days, for some random reason.

James im in brisbane as well, although on the googajoob.com road trip for a few months.

First thing i can suggest is getting familiar with who to buy from

if you can find Jack Reid, hes an old rude bastard, but hes got the mini bits.

If you want machining done you CANNOT go past the engineers at Capalaba, theyve done three of my motors and they are awesome. RLC Engine Reconditioning 5 Smith St Capalaba.

If you are going to do the motor. ie bore, offset, new bearings etc, DO THE GEARBOX otherwise you will fark everything you fixed.

From my experience,

Check the Clutch Plunger and Housing for movement and wear.
Check your Carby, its hard to get it to idle if its worn or loose.
Check the steering rack, and get an alignment. Ive been through three.
Put a NEW timing chain and gear set on. DO NOT put the old one back.

The rest is pretty straight forward.
