Hi all, more info needed for the mini noob!
I am going to put 3" flares on my 850, so I need to stick the wheels out a little. Because I have drums all around on my mini, can I just throw on cooper stepped drums?
If so, can I throw them on the front as well?
Any info is welcome, and MUCH needed.
While I am here, are all roundnose front ends (ie apron and wings/fenders) and boot floors interchangable?

No problems bringing over the drums, you will need the longer studs to go with them as well.

havent thought too much on that yet. Just the ten inch by whatever width tickles my fancy. what widths are redily available? Considering the drums are stepped by one inch, I wont need them too much wider. I really dont know exactly what options are out there. That was the next step to my research.

The standard widened drum is the 1" Cooper s/GT/Clubman S/LS/1275 LS type and are easily available as a pair for around the 100 dollar mark new. Although there are also 1/2" drums which were used on mokes. Third option is a set of spacers to suit you application, but the best option is the fixed type above. It's a good time to get a new set of pads front and back to suit the new drums machine diameter as well. It will transform your minis braking...

are spacers road legal? A guy at work said that they werent, so I had sort of put them out of the option list. But I guess that it is only illegal if you get caught. Does anyone make a 10"x7"?

I don't believe they are. Legality doesn't always seem to come into the equations when it comes to wheels around here however....so I thought I would throw it in to save someone the reply...

Do the rite thing and purchase the 1" spaced drums and also new shoes on all fours. Brakes do it once and do it correctly they are the first place of safetey.

There have been reports lately of some drums being out of round when new. If the pedal pulsates or the wheels wobble under braking, take them BACK... :!:

WOW. thanks for the link ranger 98. I didnt understand any of it, but it looks really important. ha,ha! :wink:
This link is a must for any noob or joker who "reckons" that they have it all figured out.
One last question for now on the matter. It is established now that "YES" cooper drums will fit front and rear, but are there any mods involved with the inner workings? I mean slave cylinders (?) and brake bits and things?
Yes it is true, I may not be a mechanic, but I look funny lifting heavy things, and am an expert scratcher!!
(the best part of the itchin is the scratchin!!)

The studs will need to be changed out to suit the new drums. the place you get the drums from will have these to suit. I reckon you will have to undo the front and rear drive flanges to get the studs in as they are pretty long. An easy enough job if you have a socket of the right size.

You will need to measure your old drums against your new ones, if the old drums are machined oversize (as they often are at this age) you will need to fit new pads as the old pads are most likely oversize as well. Lucky they're cheap at about 30 bucks for front or rear.

Good time to look at you slave cylinders, this is the easiest time to check them out. Replace them if they have an weeping brake fluid around the seals.
