Post subject:  Air Con for minis

I've been meaning to ask this for a while now,

Apart from opening the windows  , is there anybody out there who has air con in their mini?

If so, did you use a late UK set-up, or grab one from another type of car.

How much did it cost?

Where can you get this stuff?

What other cars do people reckon it'd be worth looking at?

Cheers

if you can find someone with time on their hands in japan they are a throw away item.. in that what is a newish mini to us, ie with air con.... can be a dumper to them.. i guess if you looked around enough youd find a spare one somewhere.. some of the parts importers would have one surely??

Any idea of who these importers may be? Or is it just a google for it kind of thing?

I don't think many UK Mini's had air con fitted...it was an export market option (Japan mainly)

Thanks.

I'll follow up with Steve about Japan import stuff.

Has anyone seen air con from a different model, diahatsu mira? other small car? put into a mini? Just need a small compressor setup to fit into a morris front end!

I have an ex-Japan "Unicla" early SPi kit (not selling!!)

It has an evaprator unit with fan etc that fits under the passenger side of the dash.

The hoses go through the heater hose holes (clutch and brake master for LHD holes) so you have to reroute tyour heater hoses somewhere else.

The condenser (bit like a radiator) fits behind the grille above the starter motor, tilted back.

The pump fits where the alternator normally goes, and the alternator relocates higher, approx where the air pump was positioned on a clubman.

Some pics of the setup on my pages:

You could replcvate something similar. eg: the condenser on an 84 Tercel is a similar size, and the under dash evap unit is similar to the many aftermarket "Escort Mark IV" ones fitted to BMW and Mercedes in the 70s.

Now that's the kind of answer I like!

No wonder we all love Ausmini so much!!! :D :D :D :D

Thanks bnicho, much appreciated!

I don't suppose you'd have a pic of the fittings with your grill removed? Would help me to figure out whwere to mount what! It looks like I'll be moving my Aux radiator from that side now!!

Any ideas on where to mount that?

Glad to help :)

I haven't fitted the air com to a car yet, the second link is a photo a friend took in a Japanese wrecking yard.

Jan's (Mutant Mini) daily driver Cooper has the same air con.

The other option, used on later Miis with in dash air, is to mount the condenser in the inner guard, just like the radiator is mounted on the opposite side.

I just took my aux radiator out and fitted a Morris 1100S one instead.

i think that would depend on the size / type of compressor you have. they're probably all different.

i was led to believe the average a/c system compressor took anywhere between 5-10hp, but thats when it is running, it would take maybe 1-2hp off. I think that it is worth it and i have been looking at getting a setup for mine. It's just a matter of selling a bit of junk to get moe space to put more junk.

Cheers

After reading the posts about the dyno day
5-10 hp may not seem alot but when a stocko 1100 puts out 25.7 hp it is a lot

my 5 cents worth

With A/C you may lose 5-10hp at the flywheel, not wheels. A stock 1100 puts out around 45-50 at the flywheel.

In Japan a lot of Mini 998s had a/c, so the compressor must be pretty efficient.
