l have tried 2 different alternators in my mini that will only initially start charging once the motor is reved to 4000 rpm One is a lucas alternator, the other of a nissan pusar q . Has any body else come across this problem. Checking the wiring diagram in my mini manual they are attached correctly to the battery, ignition and warning light wiring. |

Both alternators have built in regulators. l am also using the wiring harness out of my old clubman which is designed for alternators with built in regulators |

the radion would have been drainin the battery because there is a wire that u have to connect to the key so it turns off. or just make up another switch. |

The Bosch alternator being a much higher output unit than the Lucas needs a much tighter belt. Tighten it up and I reckon you'll see the difference. A good indicator that the belt is tight enough is if you press the belt down while spining the alternator puley you cant make the belt stay stationary (ie slide on the puley) no matter how hard you press. |

Also, check that the alternator pulley is not worn. The pressed metal ones wear badly to a U shape and then the belt slips when running. I changed the one on my EA Ford (Bosch alternator, similar to Pulsar one) to a 1 piece cast iron pulley, no more problem. Salvaged this pulley from the local auto leccy for nix. ![]() |
