Post subject: | 77 clubby losing water |
hey gents and ladies, new to this game, just finished restoring a 77 clubby with a good 2nd hand 1098 donk. only just got it reg's and driving fitted with an aftermarket temp guage showing 70-80 degrees depending on how hard its working (i assume this is about right) the guage is accurate when checked with a laser themomoeter. only problem is it seems to loose water past the radiator cap and down the overflow tube. (no bottle ???) when it cools down it still had pressure in the cooling system, i.e. leave it over night open the cap and psshht.! and the water level is low. i replaced the cap wth a new one (13psi) and next time i opened the bonet there was dried coolant all over the place, seems to have sprayed out of the cap somewhere, so put the old one back on. seems to be a fair bit of pressure in there! it has a new head gasket, new themostat, radiator seems ok but not sure..... so its not over heating but it is losing water past the cap. any ideas greatly appreciated cheers guys cam |

by pass hose: next to radiator, connecting Head to Block its a 5cm long convoluted thing, two clamps hold it that was my problem |

yeah know the hose, leaking or blocked?? seems to be leaking only through the overflow hose not anywhere else. |

mine was leaking its pretty large to get blocked try filling it right up to the top hot air expands so if you get rid of the residual air then there would be less pressure i did that too and it worked any problems with that people? |

cam the expansion of water when heated up is normal it is a thermal thing it will spit out and settle at a level above the fins normaly about 2 to 5 cm below the base were the cap sits ..... so nothing to worrie about makka |

My K was doing the same thing when I got it on the road...I used an old cap I had spare...still did it...I bought a new cap - Sweet as!! Maybe your new cap is faulty? Or maybe your cooling system is blocked. Did you get the rad flushed and overhauled? Might be wise if you didn't. ![]() |

twice now iv filled it right up. left it running cap off to allow any air to escape, if the fill it to just below the overflow hole so the neck is filled it is tubulent when the water subsides by itself its callm again in the top tank so im tipping its not the head gasket, theres no steam out the exhaust either.. maybe a stuffed rad. just odd that it sprayed out when i put the new cap on, same neck depth as the old one. ![]() |

i understand hot water expands, but when its cooled again its down below the level of the top of the core, or is this normal with no overflow, i just didnt think it would lose thast much??? |

so it is down past the fins is this corect makka |

Post subject: | below fins |
yep, just below fins, so the top tank is completely empty, takes about 700ml to fill back up fully |

hmmmmm have you looked at the oil and is it milky?? next bring the motor to operating temp and see if there are bubbles you may be getting blow by on the head gasket did they use a copper gasket or the turbo gasket copper gaskets are crap makka |

no thickshake, doesnt seem to be taking water, into the cyl, as its not steaming and not blowing bubbles all the time. just seems to be expanding puswhing water past the cap and then the water level drops when it cools, just wanna know it its normal to drop that much water and also if the clubbys had an overflow or just the pipe down to the ground? |

"thickshake"? hah BC, i dont think thats sposed to happen. water is spose to stay above the "water level" plate. i also had a crappy bottom radiator hose which i replaced and its fine now |
