I have a mate that has just brought a roundie that has a 1310 in it, ( appears to be a strong motor, ie: good oil pressure , no smoke ) it has a 45 mm weber on it , trouble is it will not run unless the choke is fully on, you can rev engine without load freely even when engine is warm but as soon as you push the choke back in it will stop. When you drive the car you have to keep pumping the throttle to keep it running.Any ideas as to what he could possibly look for rectify the problem ?

Sounds like either it's jetted way too lean, or more than likely the emulsion tubes are wrong.
eg. if carby is from an Alfa (or other car with twin Webers) there is no way the stock emulsion tubes will work in an A series, due to the siamese head ports.

I deal with ex-Alfa Dellortos not Webers but the same things apply. The emulsion tubes are always wrong and the air jets too big.

Yeah thanks Doc, it apparently run fine according to the bloke that owned it prior to the mate buying it, ( i suppose we've all heard that before ) unfortunately the mate or myself have never had anything to do with webers before so we're a bit lost at the moment as where to start looking to sort it. It's a sidedraught carby. I had a look at it today and it sounds strong when it revs , from idle up through the rev range , but as i said as soon as you let the choke off it stops.

If you want to fix it yourself (eg if no Weber experts handy) I recommend you buy a Weber book.

I got mine from www.pitstop.net.au for $40 a few years ago.

I have 2 other books on em but found this is the best. It has jet settings for A series motors too.

may have to check these books out myself. I dont know webers (amongst many other things), but now own one. What does an electic choke connect to?

Usually they were connected to 12V ignition, they have a bimetal spring in there that rotates the shaft to choke it.

Last time I dealt with one of these was on a VW, but they were common on some downdraft Webers, Solexes etc.

if your Weber is a later sidedraft DCOE, that round thing is not the choke.... but part of the emission controls. Toss it if carby is going on a mini.

Some Webers have two electrical connections. Some have an electric choke and some have an antirun-on valve.
If it has the anti run-on valve and it has no power to the connection it will shut off when you lift the foot.

its a 32/36 dfav downdraft weber. Dont know anymore than that.

That book above only covers the sidedraft Webers and Dellortos, not the 28/36DCD etc downdraft sort.

Fit an 1 3/4 SU or twin 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 SU's that will fix your weber problem

I had more trouble with getting twin HS4s right on Barney than I ever did with my 45 Dellorto. It's been 10 years now since I rekitted it. Just jet em right and forget em...
Yeah uses more fuel, but it turns into power.

I had one of those on my 1100 straight off a 2 ltr escort they run fine.

The most likely problem is a leaking gasket between the manifold and engine or under neath the carby .

Easiest way to tell is start the engine and put your hand on top of the carby to choke itif it keeps running sweet then thats the problem other than that a blocked jet in the bottom of the bowls easy enough to fix

Id check the leaking gasket first.
