ohh my god today sucked. You know one of those days that everything you do turns to crap? Started putting the head back on and everythingwas going well. Got the head studs torqued up in the correct order at the correct tension. Was feeling good. Started to tension the rocker studs up and it just kept turning. I was only gonna torque to 15 and then torque up to 25 but I managed to shag the stud before then. pulled it out and cleaned up the thread. Had another go and shagged another one. Turned it down to 10 and it clicked, wound up to 20 and POP. So I have shagged 3 studs/nuts by the time I was finished and wanted to punch something. Gave up till next week when I can get more studs. Any ideas what I did? Tried to put in my new engine mounts with captured nuts. doing it up and the captured nut gives!!! Had to get on it with a vice grip and got it off. Got it sorted out and spent about 4 hours trying to get the engine in. GAWD DAMN i was annoyed. Pulled out the engine and had a look at the new mounts. They are both half a centimetre shorter and I think that is why they would not fit. Managed to knock over a bottle of metho and a tray of 50 or so assorted nuts and bolts at the same time, chip the paint, skin my knuckles, lie down in a pile of grease and Spill uni joint ball bearings. Thank god I go back to work next week. |

I'll pike it in after the 3rd dumb mistake, or an error which costs over a hundred dollars to repair. I figure I'm obviously just to tired or not in the right mindset to make dumb mistakes. Chasing myself out of the garage is the smart thing to do. |

Those captive nut mounts have threads made of cheese. Rubbish... and they are too thick too. ![]() |

Any ideas what I did? did you put the studs in by locking 2 nuts together on them? I had the same experience as you one day, the next day I went and bought a pair of stud removers, one 3/8" and one 5/16" - looks like a spark plug socket, but has a lovely cam action locking thing inside that undoes and does up studs - and doesn't damage the threads like can easily happen when you lock 2 nuts together magic tools floss wrote: Tried to put in my new engine mounts with captured nuts. doing it up and the captured nut gives!!! Not even a strong cheese like Cheddar, these were camenbert. simon kt wrote: did you put the studs in by locking 2 nuts together on them? I am at a loss what happened to cause the to crap themselves like that. All I can think is that my torsion wrench is rooted. I hope not as I really like it, was my grandads. What else could it be?? My guns of steel ![]() D |
All I can think is that my torsion wrench is rooted. I hope not as I really like it, was my grandads. D
Yep - been there done that - torque wrench was the culprit. I replace mine and use them as big wrenches after about 5 years of hard work. My grandads one sites onthe shelf in box so it doesnt get wrecked. |
