Thought I'd post this here in case anyone is thinking of having their carby rebuilt or reconditioned...

I've just had my 1 1/4" SU Carby rebuilt for my '64 Mini by a crew called SU Midel. I had read about these guys in Australian Classic Car Mag (years ago when I used to buy it regularly) and thought I'd give them a go. Boxed it up and posted it to them, and it came back like this (!!!!):

All parts bead blasted to give the factory appearance, alloy housing polished, ferrous parts nickel plated. Throttle shaft bushings removed and replaced with new, new throttle shaft (i.e. NO MORE THROTTLE SHAFT PLAY!!!!). All new fasteners, completely rebuilt using new seals, needle, jet etc etc. I am absolutely over the moon with the result! The whole thing cost me just under $280 all up - which I think was well worth it considering the end result and the attention to detail (better than new!) - most carby places would charge around $100-150 just to put a kit through or replace the jet/needle/seals etc.

Whilst they are SU specialists they say they will do any other make of carby too - this is their website:

http://www.sumidel.com/

Now I just have to find someone who knows how to tune it once it's on the car.... (thankfully I'm not running triple SU's!).

Hope this helps!

Looks fantastic!

By the way, you got a good price. I just enquired about getting a Webber carby done for something else and they said $540! :?

I was very happy with the price, although the carby was in working condition when I sent it so it didn't need too many repairs - but pretty much every one they do needs to have the throttle shaft re-bushed. Before I sent it away you could jiggle the throttle shaft with your fingers and the play was way off the scale - this was after I had taken it to a local carby specialist who charged me $150 for an 'oversized' throttle shaft! Should have just sent it to these guys in the first place!

Think it was around a week - I think the work only took them 2 days - it probably spent more time sitting in Australia post vans! Might have been around a week and a half from the day I posted it to when I got it back.
