I think you'll find that bonnet pins would fall into this category (as being a protrusion) unless they were fitted by the original manufacturer of the vehicle, eg: bonnet mascots on the old holdens (as far as i'm aware its only these older cars that are exempt this rule). From memory all the holden ones from the early 70's say HQ on all the mascots were spring loaded for this reason just the same as the new cars have today

As a requirement of TAFE, I have to learn how to use and navigate through ADR'S (and the heavy vehicle bulletins). While having a poke through the ADR'S I found that it was actually illegal to install bonnet pins.

I think it also comes back to whether that ADR is applicable to that year of vehicle, usually they can only be enforced on cars that were made after the ADR came into action.

I know of at least 1 ausmini member running bonnet pins. IMO they add unecessary weight

how much do they weigh? Cant be much. Dont know if I would actually put them on my "Lil Grunt", just posted it cause I didnt realise there was a law about them.

Merc's, LTD's, and Caprice's etc had spring loaded mascots, and on Roller's the Spirit of Ecstasy used to disappear into the bonnet if it felt pressure. Dicko

(the bonnet pins that is, not a pedestrian!) The normal ones with the Rclip look agricultural anyway. I think the DZUS type flush fit ones are probably OK.

DZUS or Aerocatches are the way to go. Pins are not acceptable on a road car in WA regardless of age unless "as fitted as original equipment by the manufacturer"

Hiya, Mine has bonnet pins, and has passed two Vic and one Tas RWCs, and has been checked by VicRoads too... It came with them on, and I either have to get another bonnet resprayed - the whole car is due, so will wait - or leave them on. Would look terrible with just holes there. cheers! jon

anything flush mounted is fine, as it isnt the fact that you have the pins, its the fact that they protrude!! You could take someones eye out with them. The leather buckle straps are fine as well!

I think the fact they could take someones eye out is less relevant than a speeding mini about to impact them in the chest, and the weight saving would be be equalised by removing the standard hinges and catches off the bonnet.

must be short pedestrians to impact them in the chest with a mini. Humour aside, I think for it to warrant a legal ruling, then I follow the ruling. ADR's may suck in some instances, but I know that the less damage I incur to myself while slaming up someones bonnet, the better for me.
