OK, a bit of a weird one.

My workshop manual says a late Leyland van should have a 29L fuel tank, correct?

I've run mine dry, but even then I can just squeeze 13L into it before it overflows the filler neck. Even then, from about 9L onwards I have to dribble the fuel in and wait for it to blurp the bubbles out of the tank.

Most fills I have to stop at 12L.

From underneath it all looks normal, but before I drop the tank for a looksee are there any bright sparks with an idea as to what I might be looking for?

Apart from the first fill the most I remember putting in mine was 25L.
It's meant to be a 27L tank AFAIK.

Top up your jerry can and drive your van till it runs out.
Put in the contents of the jerry can, go to the nearest servo and fill the tank. Observe the litres and add the amount from the jerry can (-1L per 10ks travelled to get to servo). This should give you the tank capacity.

I always thought the tank in my 77 clubby van was 27L.

Mine bubbles a bit for the last few litres when filling too, but not to the extent you described.

Oh yeah, look at that. Looked again, it says 26L (5-3/4 gal). Musta been looking at the Moke column

Either way, it's a hell of a lot more than 13L...

I kinda did this unintentionally, I think it was the first fill after I bought it I was on my way to the service station and literally ran out while pulling in. That was when I got 13L into it. Best since was about 12, often it's 10.

Maybe the filler neck has been mucked around with at some time, unlikely but possible.

I have never really looked but i imaine where the filler goes into the tank there is a breather hole though the pipe just inside the tank to let air out.

Check that the breather line up to the engine bay is open, a blockage there could cause a problem.

My roundie van never had the problem you describe either.

27litre and allegedly a midget/sprite tank will fit inside rear subframeand a export moke tank will fit as well best of luck finding one they can be got from england $300+

The fuel gauge in our 65 van doesn't work. But I have put in 27 litres once before.

i also think mine tank must be smaller i fill up and only takes about $15-$18.00 will check the litres next time...but even at around $1.20 a litre is not 26 litres....

27 litres is the max that would ever fit in my van. To get that much in I had to rock the car to get rid of an air pocket on the passenger side, as my van leant slightly to the drivers side.

If you can only get 13 litres in some clown has filled your tank with expanding foam or something equally stupid. I'd suggest getting another tank.

The first time I pulled my fuel tank out of the 850 to paint it, I noticed there was a rattling sound coming from the tank - got the mini maglite out and a long pair of pliers and after turning it upside down a few times, I pulled out 3 jerry can spouts (between 6-10 inches in length), a piece of crumpled up rag and the busted locking assembly half of a locking fuel cap! Obviously lost in there over the years! Because the filler neck in the vans goes in on a steeper angle, perhaps something has become stuck in between the neck and the bottom of the tank and is causing an airlock when you fill? Grab a torch and have a look but you might have to remove the tank and give it a good shake!

I've managed to get 20+L int NAV numerous times. It's always painful on pumps that foam the fuel alot. I've found that filling the tank slower at about 1/2 trigger it's not too bad. I have to repeatedly burp the tank to get the most in
