Post subject: | Cooper S brakes and rubber uni's? |
So we're just gunna put my van back together and do the brakes up. Intentions all along were to put Cooper S brakes on it, but I was going to rebuild a gearbox and put hardy spicers in at the same time. For the time being, to kill many birds with one credit card transaction, can I run Cooper S brakes with rubber uni's? Is there a difference between drive shafts at all (whether it be rubber uni/drums, hard spicer/S discs, pot/drum or pot/8.4")? |

2 types of driveshafts - those for pot joints, and the rest the first cooper s's had rubber unis, as do a few of the Nb race cars - actually, I think you and I looked under the bonnet of one at Winton and we both saw it had rubber unis - so no problem... |

First S's had rubber Uni's Poeee, and I'm pretty sure the drive shafts are the same spline, apart from really early pre 1960 UK 850's? ![]() I'm sure Kev or someone can confirm...Madmatt? |

You would not want to use the rubber ones, rather than the stronger nylon (later) type. Morris 1100 would have the part number. probably knows it off by heart unless he has been drinking too much lately ![]() |

yeah same spline but "S" axleshave a "Raised-Lump" to de-note that it`s an "S" shaft & they are also just a tad shorter,,, but it don`tmatter really,,, they interchange no problemo potty shafts can only be fitted with inner potty joints , obviously Edit,,, & there`s really nothing wrong with fitting rubber U/Js,,, it actually makes the car a bit more Forgiving,,,, just make sure you only tighten the u/js up when the axles are level ... as in tighten them when the car is on the ground or jack up the wheel assys when you go to tighten them up,,,, If the U/Js are tightened with the axle on full droop,,, then the rubbr is going to already be in a stressed state the whole time while driving,,, unless you do lots of full air jumps for most of the time you`re driving ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Full air jumps... ok will do that then! ![]() Cheers for the info guys. The car already has rubber uni's in it, which aren't old (prolly done 10k miles, I put em in when I got the car). Couldn't tell ya if they were tightened flat or not. So i'll just rebuild the Cooper S brakes/hubs and put new cv's in, then just pull the drive shaft off the spline and replace the whole lot with the Cooper S kit. I'll need wheels to clear the S brakes... those globes will go great, eh Matt? |

and it's not like they're rare or anything, so don't worry about slapping gutters and wrecking them |

Cooper S drive shafts were also fitted to Minimatics! A Group Nb mini with rubber unis? I can feel a DNF coming on... |
