Post subject:  Radiator for 97 Rover Mini

hi again all
My radiator is now bubbling a bit and it is probably easier to get a new radiator rather than get the current one re-cored (but correct me if I am wrong please).

Would anyone know the correct radiator to get for a 1997 Rover Mayfair (spi and automatic).

currently she is a 3 core (I think)

thanks

Deb

Are you sure the raditator is the problem ? If the coolant is boiling it could be any manner of things

hmmm... well Geoff (Hotmoke) and my partner both seem to think it is the radiator. Hubby looked at it yesterday and said she needs re-coring....

Recondition the one you have. It's hard to get a new one with the sensor plug at the bottom.

by re-condition, do you mean "re-core" ?

I'm not sure what would be normally done when a radiator is reconditioned.
If it is a problem it may only need to be flushed out.

thanks harley.
just rang the radiator place in town (small town so only the 1!) and from what he is saying, even for re-coring you still need to get parts.

so it may be easier to get a new one...

anyone have any idea where to source one? Have looked on minisport and minispares websites and there are no specifics...

thanks
Deb

Unless the core looks damaged/corroded or is leaking, you will probably get away with having it cleaned. The radiator place can remove the top and bottom tanks and clean the core in an acid bath or similar. I had my rover one done and it was about $60, and they even painted it for me. Have not had any trouble with it since.

The rad in my mini is 40 years old and works a treat on a warm 1275.
It was simply cleaned out as above by a radiator place.

I'm sure a clean out will be fine. I'm dropping my 97 radiator off to be done this week.
Radiator mob should be able to also tell you if the cap is no good too.

If they're both good just make sure you have the right coolant in there when it all goes back together and you should be right.

Does your thermofan work?

hubby is going to give it a clean out himself today.

What coolant should we use?

And the thermofan, by that do you mean the fan that makes the whirring noise (do i sound blonde yet?).....

Is your husband going to take the two tanks off (unsoldering the top and bottom solid parts of the radiator) , and physically clean through the core by pushing things through it or is he going to wash it with caustic sollutions ? You really need to get the tanks removed and the core rodded out or several tubes can still be blocked (which won't clear from caustic sollutions) to get it working at full capacity .

Thats a good description, the fan is pretty loud when it comes on,
so no problems there.

I'll find the coolant spec later tonight.
:D
