Post subject:  Engine Numbers on a Clubman

Hey guys, I'm sure I saw a thread around here somewhere on how to read engine numbers, but I can't find it for the life of me!

I just had a quick question about the engine number of a Clubman I just picked up. The number is: 99H889AJH002351.

So far I can work out:
99 = 998cc
H = Transverse

But I can't work out the rest of it! I've tried: http://www.minimania.com/ArticleV.cfm?DisplayID=1601 But the 889 doesn't correlate to anything that list there. I was wondering if someone could shed some light on what the remaining letter/numbers mean, and if I can decipher the exact model and year of the car from these numbers.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Ben

Morris1100 will no doubt be able to explain a lot of it later , be careful trying to sort Aussie numbers out using minimania , a lot of their stuff doesnt' relate to Australian production ...

It's just a late Oz 998 Clubby motor with emission controls, air pump etc, probably 1977-1978.
These were UK built motors.
There is little documentation available, BL took their marbles and went home to UK in 1978, slashing and burning as they went.

Give us the body prefix, it's on the compliance plate and stamped into the radiator shroud.

You'll get more info about the car from the chassis numbers than the engine number.

So it's a common Leyland Mini then, not a Leyland Mini S.
S = more poSh.:wink:

interesting, i have a 1975 Mini S, ill take a photo of the compliance plate, i have the original receipt for the car, instructions, stereo instructions, etc. Had to use a different block, the one that came with the car was beyond use.

How rare is a Mini S, how many were made etc

The car is a Leyland Mini. (It is not a Clubman, it just looks like a Clubman)

I have never got all the engine code info and I am missing a lot of details about the engines.
99 = 998
H = Transverse
889 = the spec code (this is the bit I am missing, this describes the full buld spec for the engine)
AJ = Emissions/Crankcase breather spec. (but I don't know what exact spec)
H = High Compression
002351 = engine serial number.

021 = Leyland Mini (cheap Mini)
D = Compliance code = Manual
2S = 2 door saloon. (=Mini)
1 = trim level 1 (= real cheap Mini)
M = 4 speed floor change manual gearbox
09 = 998cc motor
20713 = car serial number.

awesome, thanks for the info! :)
