How come you always seem to lose the first thing you go to rebuild?!?! Checked and i think everything else is there except the thermostat bolts!

anyone know lenght type etc...

Isn't always the way... just to put another hurdle in the way!

Never the 2nd or 3rd thing always the 1st thing you go to put on!

Know the feeling - Can't find the radiator/engine mount yet I know I've seen it somewhere and also the darn 'Y' piece fuel line for the twin carbies - worrying thing about that is I haven't seen it for some time so got no idea where to look - and the garage has been rearranged since I last saw it

They are studs, not bolts.
5/16 UNC on the bottom, 5/16 UNF on the top. Can't remember length.

On my motors I use 5/16 UNC socket head capscrews. Why?
They don't corrode into the thermo housing like studs can- the act of undoing them breaks free any lurking corrosion.
I put a bit of Loctite/Permatex #3 on the threads before screwing them in.

The reason for loosing bits is so that you have to fit new ones as the old ones were stuffed :D

They were bolts in clubman motors with pollution gear.

I've seen several different styles of Thermo Housing which in turn means several different lengths of stud/bolt. Maybe measure the depth of the boss on the housing then add enough for the thread.

Here is the bolt used on a clubman 998 pollution motor with LH engine steady bracket, spacer & Air pump thermostat housing. 5/16 x 2.5 - UNC

Love the good Doc's (as always) top reason for doing things his way, ie using 5/16 UNC socket head capscrews. Doc, you're a legend the way you freely give of your information. Kudos to you.
