ive noticed it a little while now and my first thoughts were it must be the steering rack cause its loose. well now the noise has gotten louder and im starting to think it may be something else. the noise only happens when i turn left slightly and when i i slow down. when i brake i can feel it in the pedal and it knocks at the same pase as the vans movement. so now im not to sure cause the rack wouldnt cause a knock in the brakes and travel through the pedal would it?? im starting to thinking maybe the uni on the left hand side is loose and making the noise. any thoughts? |

Take a look at the rack, reach under the car and grab the left hand tie-rod near the rack and try shaking it up and down. See if it knocks. |

yeah done that and it knocks. thats what lead me to think it was the rack at the begining... but i cant work out why its coming through on the brake pedal... |

cha... this was me a day or 2 before my trip to wagga.... passenger side tie rod thread had 1 and a half spins left on it till it was off...  all cleared up now... and no knock

do you have 14 dollars go and get a pedders safety check they will have trained person in suspension to diagnose the problem for you.Then either pay them or a mechanic to fix it. Cheers TUCK3R |

If your rack is loose just buy some bits and fix it. It's not rocket science... 
All the usual wear bits for Oz racks are still available. |

When you apply the brakes the wheels want to toe-out. When you apply power it wants to toe-in. So as you brake it knocks. Inside the left hand side of the rack is a bush that wears out, it takes the braking load of the left wheel and knocks. (the right hand side has the pinion and tensioner to take the load) |

The original Oz rack bushes were felt, but now you can get either lurethane or nylon ones. The lurethane bush is made by Nolathane, p/no 41039. I got from Pedders. Karcraft carries the nylon one. |

ahhh makes sense.. i was told by mini spares that the racks in the early model clubbies arent repairable.. they are pretty much a replacement unit.. ok i just wanted a second opinion on it.. cause first thought and diagonsis was the rack is buggered and problem solved when i replace the rack. but when the brake thing started to happen along with being involved with 3 near misses at the same time sorta jumbled my head abit and has now got me second guessing myself.. so are the early model racks repairable then?? |

Note the Oz racks are all the same. But rack is 1/16" larger diameter than UK, and UK rack bushes etc do not fit it. Use oil in it after rebuild, if you want it to last. All the grease filled ones I have ever stripped were buggered by lack of lube. Leyland decided to use grease, the rack maker (Cam Gears) advised against it- they say top them up with gear oil. |
