hey, im just wondering if i can clean the gearbox out without taking out or ruining the bearings/ gears, as it has been sitting around for a while and i dont want crap through a rebuilt engine do i use kero? cheers leighton |

Sorry but you will not get ALL the crap out unless you strip the gears out. Even if you do remove the layshaft, cluster gear and oil pickup + strainer, crud hides in the nooks and crannies under the mainshaft gears. Not worth the risk, with a new/rebuilt motor up top. I'd pull the gears out, diff too. Also it lets you check the condition of layshaft and all the bearings. I just did up an A+ box, it looked OK from above, but both the plastic cages in the big mainshaft bearing had disintegrated, bits were spread all over the box. And the diff pinion had lost a tooth because of it. The diff pin and planet gears were knackered, too. Sure it might cost you a few bob to be sure, but it's worth it for peace of mind and reliability. |

I agree it is possible that you will loosen up bits of Stuff that has settled in a hard mass and this will then be very bad for Oil pump bearings etc |

oh i see..... i have little money- (17 yr old student) and not much time (the whole thing must be finished by the 24th August) for HSC and i can only do the engine at school with 40 min periods 8 times a fortnight and the body etc is done at home. would cleaning it out with kero be atleast a short term fix? |

If by short term you mean you put it on the engine and run it anyway...then it may as well be long term.... |

If you have or can borrow the tools, you will have it stripped in an hour or less. 
Why not get Ryan or someone down there to help you? No need to pull the mainshaft gears off, just wash the whole mainshaft assembly with degreaser or diesel when you get it out. You can leave all the gear selector forks etc in there too. I'm just afraid you new engine will end in tears if you leave dirt in there......

the markers have to see the engine running. so i guess it would have to be long term
too much to do, not enough time. im intending to buy a 1275 and rebuild that eventually. ok so my real question is it worth using kero as a cleaning agent in the gearbox or leaving it as is? will i create more problems using kero by lifting up hard masses of "stuff"? |

OK now I see your point.... If it is pretty clean really, I would take the side cover off, and slosh some diesel (NOT kero) though it. I find kero tends to leave gritty stuff behind. Then blow it all out with an air hose. Keep doing this until the diesel runs out clean.
