Dry fit the geatbox to the back flywheel cover with the drop gear in place (and the gasket) to make sure it has the right clearance and all turns.
If it selects all gears out of the car, then there should be no reason why it won't when fitted.

i have just rebuilt my first gearbox all new bearings, new layshaft, syncro rings where within tolerance etc. i can select all gears ok with my rod change shifter hooked up. Now is there a way before i connect this to my new engine to tell if its going to work ok? i dont really want to go on my first drive with a fresh 1275 engine and not be able to select gears, or damage the engine. |

( Drop gear AKA idler gear ) If it's too tight or loose, be aware that flywheel housing gasket thicknesses vary these days, depending who you buy `em from. Once upon a time (when all parts were genuine) they were all the same... not now. Hint: Put the box together with the same gasket you tested it with....

I don't need engine and flywheel on do I ? No you dont need to, but as tombo said best you get the idler clearance right before you fit the g/box to the engine. Do all the bolts and nuts up as you would when fitting it to the engine for the final time so that you get the right clearance on the idler gear. Have you fitted the outrigger bearing to the 1st motion shaft and fitted the outter race that came with the outrigger bearing into the flywheel housing? |
