OK, so Nan5 is on the road. Thing is, the wife wants to drive it but reckons it needs a heater!!!

I ask her why the **** does she buy so many coats. That didn't work. Maybe Mothers Day wasn't the time to stand toe to toe with her?? Maybe.

So, pros and cons? The car is so original I afraid to mod anything. It has 29k original miles. Can you get heaters these days and how much carnage will it be to install? Will I be able to remove it and have little or no sign of it later?

Or am I up for another bleedin' coat or two?

So much for alpha male huh?

There were quite a few heaters available back then, the most common probably was a Smiths under dash one, there were others whose names escape me.
From 1965? or so onwards there was also the optional factory fresh air one for the Deluxe, later made standard on the MiniMatic.

These days it's probably easiest to hang a Clubby one in there under dash. It has a fan, which the fresh air one didn't.
I wouldn't bother ducting fresh air to it, just let it recirculate cabin air like the original S one did.
If you sell the car you can just pull it back out...

Thanks Doc. Much appreciated and probably cheaper than the wardrobe enhancements :)

There's always the smith generic designed heaters. These were like heating afterthoughts, good for retro fitting onto older australian vehicles. There's usually a few on ebay...and perfect little period items as well...

factroy fitted back in the day so no butchering really, just a couple of bolt holes & hook up the 2 hoses & away you go

easy-peasy

No fan in these, but if you want one for when sitting in traffic go to Bias Boating or Whitworths chandlers and grab an Attwood 3" bilge blower.
A bit noisy but OK when sitting still and freezing.
I just shoved mine into the ducting... it's the white thing...

Alternatively for the IT savvy, 80mm CPU fan ducting and an 80mm variable-speed chassis fan works really well too, and is whisper quiet 8)

Looks good. :)
I was concerned that the bilge blower (being all PVC) wouldn't stand the hot air, but it's been in there about 7 or 8 years now. :D

I was a little dubious about the PC fan too, most tend to have really crappy bearings and seize up after a year or two. That combined with the probably gritty air passing through it... but it's still going strong after 12 months continuous use, shows no sign of slowing down yet.

Good thing is they're plentiful and cheeeeep to replace, a couple of bux each 8)

As it happens I have one of those fans sitting here bought by mistake- it's ball bearing too, not the cheapo sleeve bearing...

Bamnfi,

I reckon you will be able to sort it out pretty well - otherwise you may have to let her drive the heater equipped S!

Good luck!

Dont put some deluxe or clubman heater in your very original 850. Search for an original 850 heater, in Australia we the option of a Smiths recirculatory heater, the same as fitted to a 997 Cooper. 850 "supers" in the UK had a Mk1 S heaters fitted, which are'nt that hard to find here.
