Post subject: | Fan belt/squeaky stuff |
hi all. when we fixed the radiator on the weekend, hubby forgot to do up one the hoses properly... which we did not notice until yesterday when the temp gauge kept going up. Luckily we pulled over in time and a lovely old couple helped us. But what the new problem is, there is a horrible squeaking noise which we are pretty sure is the fanbelt (we changed the fanbelt about 5000kms ago but we are wondering if yesterdays incident damaged her hence the squeaking again?? Secondly, I bought the last fanbelt from a man in Ipswich, QLD but have lost his details... anyone know...? And finally, she now makes a little "tick tick tick" noise... hubby thinks it may be the air-con bearing but I no longer trust him ![]() thanks |

Some fan belts are noisier than others. Mine sounded more like a water pump or alternator bearing gone, I put a new QH belt on and now it's fine. Hint: watch the label on the belt as it goes past, if a noise happens at the same frequency, it's definitely the belt that has a problem. |

Is the noise continuous or only when you rev the motor? If it is when you rev then the belt is slipping and you may only need to tighten it by adjusting the alternator tensioner bracket |

If that doesn't stop slip I bet the alternator pulley is worn to a U shape. If so, bin the pulley and find a new one. No other way to fix the tin ones. |

On the late rover Dribble has, the fan belt has a specific tensioner, not an adjustable alternator. The alternator and AC compressor are fixed to the engine block. Dribble, I can get you a fanbelt part number, I have one at home. |

It might also be the radiator rubbing against something else. They will squeak sometimes when the engine vibrations push them up against the inner guard. Lean on the radiator to see if the note changes or disapears. |

hi guys should have explained I have a 97 rover mini (automatic). The noise only started this morning after nearly cooking the engine last night. Once we spray some WD40 near the fan belt she goes quiet for a bit.... we will have a look tonight and do some "testing" fan belt part number would be great thanks harley |

I'm going to post my problem here as it's very similar. I tightened my fan belt up a few weeks ago as it seemed a bit loose. Afterwards it started to squeal, particually when the alternator was under load. I looked a couple of days ago and the belt has completly worn away. Theres a fine coating of rubber now all over the fan and radiator. Is it possible that I over tightened the belt? I'll take a good look at all the pulleys on the weekend and put a new belt in, but I don't want it to happen again. ![]() |

I'd say you either had the wrong belt or it was old and worn to start with. |

Check that alternator pulley for wear, it's exactly what mine did last year. |

only changed it about 5000kms ago and has been fine until our incident yesterday.... so maybe it is not the belt???? will have a look tonight |

Out near the Air Force base..? Through Ipswich itself, out on Old Toowoomba Road..? If so, it's Ken at Mini Auto. His details are also in the How To section on here, under Australian Mini Businesses. ![]() |
