My Princess has twin SU's and a flat, steel, air filter - looks like the same one on the Cooper S

My question is.....

Are all the flat air filters the same ie is the distance between the carbys standard?

I'd like to have the old girl breathe a bit better and want to drill come additional holes in the body of the air filter to increase air flow but don't want to ruin the filter I have so am on the look out for another but need to be sure it will fit

Oh no...please don't...they're worth a squillion dollars these days and a pain to find.

Paul Gulson sells a resin replica. They would be well suited to the job and cheaper to source.

In answer to your question, yes they are the same distance on MOWOG manifolds.

On the MG1100 and maybe the Princess too, the twin carby spacing is different to a Mini, why I dunno.

You sure doc, everything's is the same on the MG1100 except maybe for spacers and manifold drillings?

They used a pot type air cleaner however.

Pretty sure they are spaced 1/2" different. Let me find the Cooper manifold chart...

here, MG1100 is bottom pic.

Don't do it. It will not breathe any better.

If you have to do something as an experiment just take off the base and fit the filters and the lid to the elbows.

Or leave the lid off and make a couple of washers to seal the filters.

I saw the Gulson plastic one - that was where I thought I'd go, I'm not going to chop up something rare.

M1100, last time we were tuning it as soon as the air filter went on the revs dropped quite a lot so I thought if we could get more air in I might get more power out.

Then again, there is a reason I'm an OT not a mechanic (it's cause I know bugger all about mechanicing  )

There you go...

I wonder if it cured some mixture issue, or just a little more clearance for the master cylinders...

When the eng dropped revs was that at idle. If it was double check that the carbys are syncronized. The air filter should not make that much difference when the eng is only at idle unless one piston is up higher than the other due to that carby butterfly open more than the other

thanks David, the carbys are knackered hence she didn't make the recent Tassy tour, awaiting the mini being finished and paid for before I book her in and make the next installment on my mechanics mortgage!
