Hi,

I just picked up my moke this weekend after the engine was pulled down and rebuilt. It has done about 2hrs running and hasn't left my street. The oil is black as black can get, Shouldn't it be clean as a whistle?

.

What was rebuilt? the short motor or long motor or the entire unit?
If the entire unit was rebuilt(inc gearbox) I would say yes, you have issues.
If you just had one part of it done, IE the short motor then you will find the bit you haven;t done should have been done as well.

2 hours running and hasn't left your street is a bad thing.... the engine can't have been put under any load so the rings and bores will be glazing

blowby putting soot in the oil

If they put LMM molygrease or similar on the cam & lifters (like I do) to bed them in, that will send it black.
I can't think of any other reason.

Ive driven it about 10klm, my drive way is 300m up hill and just up the street a couple of times and on my property.

I'll give them a ring in the morning and see what they say and post the reply.

Did your engine have an oil cooler that wasn't drained maybe?

Might as well throw in an oil filter if you are thinking that way...sounds remote though

I dont think it has an oil cooler.. (The moke has been in my wifes family a very long time and was going to waste so i took it upon my self to get an engine for it and fix it up).

I serviced my falcon turbo a couple of weeks ago and its still looks gold and that car has a hell of a life.

Give it a good flush with some cheap 20W50 and change the filter. This will eliminate the contaminants but if it goes black again, I would be going back to the builder and asking what's the go. Avoid just running it in the driveway as mentioned before you aren't loading up the ring lands so possibly you have already glazed the bores so a renowned and new rings might be in order.

Hooroo

Another mate said its likely the stuff they use when building the engine that makes it go black plus maybe a bit of old oil in the gallery.

When i mentioned running in the driveway, Im on a rural property and its 600m down the drive way and back on a hill not just sitting in the one spot running and ive gone up and down the road a few times which is a few klms of small hills. It drives real smooth and runs sweet.

If they rebuilt it properly, they would have removed the gallery plugs and cleaned the oilways out.
