How do you test one to see if it's working, my new MK2 Cooper S the fuel gauge reads full when its not & the volt meter does'nt read any volts, i've tested the alternator & its putting out enough volts.

It's a pain the get to the the back of the speedo with the HIF44 carb on it, so i only want to do it once.

With 12 Volts across "B" and earth the should be 10 volts across "I" and earth. You'll have to take it out to test it.

your volt gauge does not run through the voltage reg, the only omes that do run with the reg are the fuel and temp gauges, do as womabt says and check the reg

The trouble with trying to test them is that they are electromechanical. They either put out 12V or nothing, averaging out to 10V. A modern digital multimeter will ****** around between 12 and 0. An older style analogue meter with a needle is usually better for testing them.
