Post subject:  Diff Movement

Last week at trade school i replaced the diff side covers because the inner pot bushes were nacked aloowing to much movement of the inner cv and giving me a oil leak around the seal. so i replaced it all and it now seals.

But while doing this i noticed about 10mm of up down movement of the diff on each side(what ever the arm is called with the spline that the inner cv pot goes over)

i dont no what causes this it drives ok just want to no if its critical to fix or are all minis like it??

if so what can i do to fix it.

its an A+ gearbox.

Thanks

Matt

It means that the 2 output shaft bushes inside the diff are `a bit' worn..
10mm is way too much, are you sure it's that bad?

It will flog out your seals and the new bushes.
It's a case of one fault causing the other..

If you get in and change the bearings out before it gets any worse, you will save yourself the cost of another pair of sidecovers.

another question then..

on an A+ gearbox is it an engine out job to to remove the diff? i think it needs to be done before hay

yep, any Mini motor & box has to come out to get at the diff.
You leave the motor on the box though.

on a rod change you can leave the engine in to get diff out
just remove drive shafts and pot joints, and roll pin on gear selector, then undo side covers and rear diff housing

I'd call the stumpy splined shaft an output shaft.

A little play there would be ok (1mm at the tip)

I don't know if the A to A+ diffs are very different but on an old box you can see the bearings with the side covers off.
Was the play in the bearings or was the output shaft wobbling around inside it all?

Either way, a lot of diff play + motorkhana = trailer home.

I've blown 1 diff and it smashed a hole in the gearbox, 5L of hot oil on the road makes a mess

A+ diff is no different to any other rodchange- except the 2 planet gear copper thrust washers have a tag on each so they don't spin and wear the diff hemisphere.
sit the 2 pot joint housings back on and rotate them both forward and back, any excessive movement or clunking means the diff crosspin and planet gears are on the way out.
If so, make that 1/4-1/2 a motorkhana then trailer home.

Get your diff out and see where the play is. If you are not sure what to look for take it to someone who does but i'm sure you will spot the problem.
Let me know if you need help.
