 Post subject: Diff bearing removal

Whats the best way to remove the diff bearing from the crown wheel.Its just the inner race on there but I haven't been able to budge it.I have tried heating and I'm going to try freezing it next.
I was able to get the one off the diff centre by cooling it fist and then a few taps on it to give me enough clearance to get the puller onto it.

You can thin it right down in 1 spot by grinding a big flat on it. Then hit it there with a chisel and BFH.

There was a very neat, simple removal method on MiniMania forum this year but I can't remember it.

OK I found out the simple method from MM forum-
Put an exhaust pipe clamp around it, then use a 2 or 3 leg puller. :P

I once had a set of puller legs called "spoons" They would simply slot into the bearing cage, and you would then turn them sideways. The spoon shaped end would engage the inner and outer bearing race intact. You could pull a bearing through the housing without dissassembly...

They would work nicely if they were available...

For a compleate bearing, 2 flat blade large screwdrivers between the bearing & crownwheel, against the crownwheel bolt heads. pull screwdrivers up towards each other. Works every time.
If you have the inner race only you can use a bearing splitter (used for axle bearings) and a press, 2 large bits of angle iron to support the bearing splitter.

Yeah the early ones are pretty easy, it's the later ones that are a PITA. They pull apart and you are left just with the inner journal, and sometimes it's bloody tight.
Very nice to have a press and the proper puller gear, but not many of us do.

Well with a little bit of heat persuasion , the exhaust clamp method worked a treat . :)
