long story short,
i have a round nose shell that i would like to work on, however, as of recently i have no where to actually work on it. Today talking to the old man he suggested that i hire out my own self storage unit and transfer it there.

Seems like a good idea however i think there might be a few problems with it;
will they allow me to grind and weld and do all the fun body stuff to it in there?
what about trying to rebuild the engine, any particular things to watch out for, ie epa regulations etc?

cheers,
robbie

They may have their own ideas of what you can and cannot do there. I imagine storing a shell won't be a problem, working on an engine won't be a problem either.

Grinding and welding will need to be taken up with the providers. You won't be the first to do this kind of project out of a self storage unit.

I looked at this idea over ten years ago with a fargo that I was checking out. Same story, I could store it, but not rebuild it while on their premises.
They basically said that if they let me, then they have to let everyone, and before you know it, the storage facility would become a smash repairers. They also threw into the equation about their insurance not covering this type of activity.
Check it out though, things may have changed.

Most self storage places only have open mesh for a 'roof'. Can't see it working mate as crappola would fly everywhere.

The big worry is if your grinding sparks set fire to the next doors crystal meth lab.
A mate of mine used to sell fireworks, he used to keep them in storage units all over Sydney (and Penrith  ) You never know what is in the unit next door.

Motel rooms.

I know a motel that was used for a pron shoot, the owners were very pissed off because they thought it was a travel guide video and they were in some scenes (not the pron scenes)

I don't know what upset them more, appearing in a porno (fully clothed in a restaurant scene) or the fact that because they thought it was a travel guide they gave them free food and a big discount on the room.

Back to the topic - your self storage unit probably won't have power.

If you have the ground space at home why not look at hiring a shipping container? Iknow it was a few years ago but we hired one to store our funiture while the house was getting built and it was abut $50 a month - probably more now but you would have to pay rent in a storage unit anyway.

I think you will also find them pretty expensive, which will probably rule it out for you just on price.
Ps - have you finished with that dizzy I Ient you?
I may need it back.
