Post subject:  another oil post. thicker or thinner

hello.

sorry to make another oil post but i need soem advice which i cant find.

im about to make the long trip 1500km round trip from adelaide to hay in the mini. have to do it once. i wil have another car on trailer i can swap with if mine dies:(

but before i do i want to find out what oil to use on the open road.
normally in the city i use HPR30(20w60) same for small open road trips 80kmish

but becuase ill be doing 750km in a day at about 100kmh
should i be using something alittle thincker like hpr40(25w-70) due to getting abit more heat in the engine on the open road.

Thanks
Matt

what time of day are you driving?
VEry early morning? Leave it 20w50.
In fact in winter you should be right leaving it 20w50

Take the plunge, put some KMX 20W/50 or Castrol Edge 25W/50 in it.
Both handle abuse better than Penrite does (whether 30 or 40), and they are SG oils (not later), this means they are better for use in the gearbox.

not the Edge Sport 25W/50. It's a mineral oil, made for street machines.. (suits Minis too  )

<edit> Graham Russell and many of us here used to use this Castrol, but the price has now got ridiculous for what it is. Pays for their marketing machine...
KMX has the same performance at 1/2 the cost.

What we found when doing that trip-it was more important to keep topping up the fuel tank where possible.
The LS was gobbling it up
