It's the right one that is touching - the centre one is soooo close
Wondering if I pack out the cross bar with some washers between the bar and the heat shields to give some clearance

Should the springs - well one or maybe 2 - of the springs in a twin SU setup be touching the centre pipe of my 3-1 Maniflow header at no throttle ? |

Hi David, No. Can you post some pics? Matt PS, where do you have the springs going from and to? 2 should go to the heat shield from the throttle levers and one from the boomerang shaped piece in the middle of the throttle linkage the throttle cable bracket is attached to. (The middle spring attaches to the opposite end of the boomerang piece than the throttle cable.) |

The original "S" centre exhaust pipe doesn`t stick out as far as the maniflow one, so yes the centre spring will probably hit,,, the other route for the centre spring is to hook it under the throttle lever & connect it "UP" to the air filter housing |

I had the same issue with the cooper earlier this year when the original extractors finally gave up the ghost. It was fairly easily resolved by placing the bar that the springs are attached to, on top of the heat shield and spacing it away with washers sufficient for the springs to clear the extractors |

Ah! So I am meant to have 3 springs!  On my MG the middle
spring seemed sloppy and an after thought, so I left it out so I better see about refitting it!

When you are racing the rules require that each carby has to have two springs. With this set up the middle spring is the second spring for the other carbies. But you need the middle spring in place to hold tension on the cable, it helps when you adjust the linkage so that the carbies open at the same time. |

Packed the bar out with 5 washers each side - lifted the bar about ΒΌ" off the heat shields that gave the springs a good 1/8" clearence from the header - happy now

Haven't used a third spring in 20 years. Don't SUs have an internal spring?? That plus the external items shown = the required 2 per carb. From memory the third spring works upwards and there's provision for its attachment to the bottom of the S aircleaner. Cheers, Ian |

maybe so but they wont let you run a webber with one external spring must have to to comply with the rules so why should a SU be any different ? |

Webers don't have an internal spring??? With twin SUs (as per topic) if one breaks then there's still three left.... with the weber you're just SOOL. Cheers, Ian |
