is this a starter solenoid or switch? ![]() The wires on it are a white with red trace which goes to starter motor solenoid 2 black wires going to ground and i am sure there was another wire in the middle question: in my haste for cleaning up my wiring i don't remember what wire goes to the middle spade connector? anyone else with a 77 clubman have this switch or a picture or something |

It's a relay - don't know enough about Clubbies to know if this was standard or an after thought |

I am a VERY novice home mechanic/sparky. I only have my crappy lil grunt to go by, but it looks kinda like a relay to me. Apart from that, I am no help at all! Sorry. |

It's definitely a relay, but I don't think any Clubby had them fitted at the factory. I'd bet it's either for air horns (if you have any) or lights. The line from the starter solenoid will be the power feed, you should have a wire going off to a switch in the car somewhere, and another off to whatever is being fed by the relay. Good luck... |

The late cars had a relay on the RH inner guard. I don't recall what it was for. ![]() |

Its the factory fitted relay that operates the Brake fail light in the dash. The black & black w white trace wires should have a plastic plug on them, they connect to the switch that should be in the side of the tandem master cylinder. the other 2 wires will be scotch locked into the loom up around the fuze box. |

i thought that the brake Master Cylinder switch went in there, but i wasn't sure why would the white with red trace(going to starter solenoid) be on the same relay ? |

Wow, there you go, I've learned something today ![]() My '78 van has the brake warning light missing, that'd be why I don't have one ![]() |

i am going to assume the the white red from the starter solenoid goes to the brake switch relay providing power (there is a t join on this wire) rest of the wire will go to the start/ignition switch the white black comes from the tandem MC brake switch to the relay providing the signal (eg brake mc is faulty or not) And there are 2 ground cables on the relay Does this sound right? None of this is shown in the wiring manual By Relay i mean the thing in the first pic i posted |

Correct me if I'm wrong here but you shouldn't have two Black /earth wires only one (position #30) |

OK see if you can follow this. The relay is wired - 86 & 87 BLACK - joined together & are attached next to the relay bracket/earth with a self tapper. 85 White w red - scotch locked to the White w red wire in loom. 30 White w black - scotch locked to the Black w white wire in loom. The relay switches earth & is used to self test the "Brake Fail" light every time you turn the key to start. The black plastic plug goes to the switch on the master cylinder - this switch will work if the valve in the master cylinder moves due to a problem with the brakes (eg loss of fluid) & the light comes on - it has 2 wires Black w white, this gos to the light & Black - gos to earth The light itself has the Black w white wire and a green power wire from the fuze box. Most cars these days the switch has been broken of the master cylinder and the Brake fail system doesnt work. The other light in the dash is the hand brake light, it also has a green power wire and a red wire that gos down to the switch on the hand brake lever. I hope this answers your question. Regards David. |
