How sooo many people on this forum seem to display rather large chunks of knowlege on minis & their many varied particulars,,, yet "Some" of this "Knowlege" is just soooo wrong

it`s just wild what has been typed as fact by sooo many,,, just makes me laugh & now days i`m figuring that i shouldn`t even bother responding with the truth (as i see it) on these matters for fear of opening cans or worms or for fear of people assuming i`m just having a go at people

Suggestion here people--->>> If you don`t "KNOW" it as actual & absolute "FACT"... then maybe just add something like---> "i`ve heard" ,,, or,,, "I thought",,, Or ,,, even ask if it`s right,,,, or something like that... seems to me there are now sooooooo many X-Spirts here :-)

winge over :-)

Or you do just behave like me and then nobody assumes you know anything  which is probably correct.

However one of the skills with this place is determining who knows stuff and who knows stuff (all but answers with certaintity). Just the same as every other car forum.

My rule of thumb is wait for the next 2-3 responses and if something isn't corrected then there's not necessarily a need for it.

I like to say..."Corrct me if I'm wrong"

This is why many a time I don't ad to a post as I also have a lot to learn and do use search a much as I can before adding anything off the top of my head.

In saying this many a thread questions are so open to a possible multipe of reasons without a bit of investigation first:lol:

I'd prefer if you corrected them Matt.

Its not that I don't appreciate the warning, but this kind of post casts a wide shadow on all people who stick their neck out to answer a question on the forum. Its kind of like walking in a room and claiming that "Someone in here is a thief!" and walking back out.
If someone mentions X and it should be Y, then generate and expand the discussion if you could. It's an archive I suppose afterall and shouldn't be left with an unanswered question mark hanging over its head.

Mate, get over it. I love to see the broad spectrum of life and knowledge that is evident here. This in Wikipedia for mini nuts, not a Doctoral thesis. Maybe a Germanic forum would suit????

As others have said/intimated, the answer(s) are eventually found. We have the space for facts, BS and wild out there theories. Ya have to love that surely.

i like to go into threads with questions and go off on tangents about my own problems because it increases my post count.

I think what Matt is getting at, is that most of the time when someone asks a question, people reply with an answer that is phrased in such a way as to appear a statement of fact. I don't think Matt has an issue with people replying with their tidbits of information, just so long as they phrase it so that they are not taken to be an expert on the matter.

This forum is here to help people, but sometimes its counterproductive when people go chasing after a remedy someone provided that is not right/relavent.

100% agree mini man. But to sound hipocritical, I have probably done exactly what your talking about. Apologies if I have.
I have a gripe about the nitwits that would rather jump on a topic just to slam dunk a poor guy who has asked for help, or made a sujestion on how to fix a problem. A lot of the time it may be relevant, but not always.
I may be a novice, not an idiot. Like so many other noobs, we will take everything on board.
Sorry, let me add that all the knowledge that has been passed on to me personally has been good. Very little to gripe about there.

mini-mad-matt has nailed it,,, appologies if the way i typed my first post miss-lead any of you tho

I really don`t like (& won`t) pick on anyone in particular because for a start it`s not the point & there`s no need to be-little anyone,,, but 2ndly i generally read what people type before i even bother to see who`s typed it,,, on occasion i see some interesting & very informative material directly related & helpful to the question at hand & i`m happy & move on knowing i`m not needed & it`s a wonderful feeling to know that there are kind , intelegent, knowlegable, experienced people here really doing their bit to provide good quality information where it`s needed & asked for,,, & i do try to note who typed such love care & attention :-)

& no i`m not picking on you Doc,,, how can i possibly pick on you,,, even if you do get the occasional miss :-) (Hey,,, i`m not imune to it myself,,, I`ve stuffed up my fair share of ill-informed replys in my time i`m sure)

But when things like ---> & i must say right now i have no idea who typed this stuff & i don`t care to look & it`s not meant to pick on anyone so please be clear on this as i`m only using it as an example & to be honest it`s what topped it for me to make this thread & i will appologise right now to those who did type it cause i really don`t mean to offend anyone,,, just using this particular one as an example ,,, but there have been many many more recently & it just seems like it`s getting worse...so appologies to everyone for using people as examples ok?

The SU thing,,, someone said that SUs have internal return springs,,, then someone else said no they don`t,,,, then someone said that webers don`t & another said yes they do,,, & well,,,, crickey,,, IF you`re going to type a reply attemting to help out then PLEASE get some facts straight & type a full sentence with all the info to make things totally clear,,,, or just don`t type it.,,, or like i said,,, make it a question or say something like """i`ve heard but i`m not perfectly sure""" or something like that if you`re that keen to help & add to the thread.... I really do like that you`re all trying to help,,, that`s why we`re all here right??? we`re all the helpfull eager type of people & i applaude that in all of you,,, i really do (group hug now) :-)

I too am just trying to help so don`t slam me ok? ok you can slam me if you like i don`t really care :-) but here`s maybe what should have been typed--->

some SUs have no internal return springs & an external one is needed (early systems) & the spring is mounted to the side of the carb with a retainling bracket,,, The later HIF series SUs have a spiral return spring fitted to them ,,, attached to the shaft & body of the carb... so some do & some don`t depending on the model/series of carb,,, but what was typed in that thread just wasn`t clear at all & was quite miss-informing wasn`t it ???????????????

The webers,,, well,,, most side draft DCOE carbs have an internal spring (or are meant to) & it will be inside that little meatl plate inbetween the throats on the manifold end of the carb,,, but maybe if yours doesn`t, then it`s probably gone missing at some stage or whatever,,,

but to just type "STUFF" & type it as if you know what you`re talking about,,, then other (not so experienced) people are going to read this nonsense & on & on it goes, round & round in circles & i`m sure some people think it`s funny (me,,, hence the title of this thread) but it can & will surely miss-lead many others & cause even more crud because word spreads & they read it here on Ausmini so it must be right ,,, yeah???

NGs wet wagon,,, heaps of typing & going no-where because so much of it is all wrong (or rather "Maybe" not so right- depending) & he is now (i`m sure) so confused with what he should & shouldn`t do with the poor thing,,, have any of you actually seen the car & done any assessments & diagnosis on it yet>??? there`s way too much stuff to go through & he is asking for help yeah,,, & he`s getting lots of good info & that`s whay wer`e all here & that`s all good,,, but crickey there`s some crud in there too so yeah,,, no he`s really confused.

ah well,,, it just got to me i spose & maybe now & then people here need a bit of a humbling to help them realise that maybe the info they believe as absolute truth,,, might not actually be true,,, & to type it on here as fact my cause trouble for those who go away with total belief in it & it could cause major damage to others both with their cars & maybe even their human bodies & emotions

just imagine it,,, Ausmini forums said that SUs have an internal return spring so i don`t need to add that one on the side of the carb yeah,,, start her up son,,, ok dad,,,rrr,,,rrr, rrr,,wwwWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BANG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yeah how cool would that be????? NOT

:-)

ah well,,, it was just my time to have a winge about it i spose,,, sorry if it offends,,, didn`t meant to in any way,,, just want to help the people who are obviously trying to help out, make things a bit clearer if/when they type stuff,,, don`t be in so much of a hurry,,, maybe read it back to yourselves before hitting the submit button & imagin being the person on the other end of it trying to decifer & make sense of what you type

ok,,, i`ve had my winge for the month :-)

nobody was born with experience. people who have aquired knowlege have either learnt from their mistakes or mistakes of others.
As my father said" if you have a open unbiggoted mind then you will learn something every day of your life, including the day you die, and that is what it is like to be dead"
Eveyone has their own ideas on variuos subjects ,but being willing to listen to others is important.
