In the old days when all cars leaked oil we used to wrap the engine mounts in plastic to save them getting buggered by oil. Just a thought.

Is this because the oil eats away at the rubber in the engine mounts?

Thats correct.
Motor oil etches natural rubber.
This is why you should use "rubber grease" when greasing rubber parts.
Quite simple when you think about it :)

if you buy replacement engine mount rubber kits now, they are actually red polyurathane I think. not rubber anyway.

I doubt they will be effected by oil. About $12 a set (4) from Repco does one engine mount.

edit: I thought you were talking about the top engine mounts, but I just realise you may have meant bottom mounts.. I know nothing about them ;)

I wonder if you can buy poly engine mounts. They would be the ultimate answer. Be bloody stiff though.

you can buy them, they're in miniworld etc. look pretty cool, they're yellow, and are in 2 pieces you put a pin through them. half goes on the subframe and half on the engine, they slot together when you drop the motor in....
