Is it true that the centre oil pick has to be removed at regular intervals for cleaning?

Smithy is right. It's only a strainer, like the original but smaller.

What DOES need removal and real regular cleaning (if you have one fitted) is the aftermarket magnetic oil trap that goes into the back of the gearbox, into pump inlet line, above the RH inner U/J or pot joint.
I had one in for a week, then oil pressure started to drop off, so I ripped it out- it was 1/2 clogged with fine debris.
I will never fit another- it's in a bastard of a spot if you have an LCB.

I now put a couple of 20mm dia `rare earth' superstrength magnets on the outside of the spin-on filter- has a similar effect and no cleaning required.

You don't get much made for $100 these days. They are probably only made in small batches, are not a standard MOWOG part.
Then there's freight from UK, etc etc.

I could make them here, but not at that price!

Well, when I say Lucky, I really should quantify that statement. Lucky I have a central oil pickup. Unlucky the reason I know is because my engine needed to be pulled down only about a week and a half after we got the car on the road.

It is advisable that gearboxes fitted with this attachment be removed regularly to ensure that no excessive build up of sludge has built up around the gauze mesh. quote from
