Hi, just sprayed my roof using acrylic, still needs another rub back and some clear to make it shiny. Just wondering if anyone had anytips with using acrylic as I usually use enamel for spraying but have gone the cheaper option so I can get 'Giovani' on the road quicker. I have never clear coated a paint job so any hints would be great. Cheers Mark |

Clear coating does not give you a shine to your paint. In fact clear coating alters the colour sligtly. If you rub throught the clear coat it will stand out. You can get just as good a shine from the base coat with acrylic. Make sure you lay on plenty of paint (I usually do between 9 and 12 coats) rub back with 2000 wet and dry. Maguires has a range of polishes from Heavy cut, to medium cut, to fine cut and finish it with a swirl remover. It can be sealed with their wet look or Medallion polish. Dont be afraid to polish with each level a few times. take your time and you will get a show finish, that is dead flat. G. |

But, when the sun's UV has burned the crap out of the clear in a few years, you will see why metallic acrylics don't last too well. ![]() My Fiat 124 Sport (medium blue metallic) looked sooo nice until the paint carked it.. ![]() |

G'day, I have also done a bit of spraypainting, and have been told by a friend (an expert for over 35 years, who runs a bodywork), that clear is only needed for metallic paint, Tony ![]() |

ah well there ya go. I had planned on heaps of red paint followed by copious amounts of clear to ensure I got a nice deep shine.. seems I just need to polish the crap out of the red to achieve the finish I want that will probably last longer than if I clear coated it. ![]() Im using acrylic also, got the first paint on yesterday and Im very impressed with its coverage and finish from just the first "teething" coat. I can see 5-10 coats of acrylic, followed by the polishing method outlined above should bring it up beautifully ![]() |
