Post subject:  Steering Issues

Hi Guys

I'm experiencing some pretty bad steering shakes from about 80km/h upward which is getting quite frightening!
I'm running 13x7 superlights but got a wheel alignment not to long ago so I imagine I don't need another one.

My mate has also just put spaced drums front and back on his mini and he is running 13x7's aswell and has recently experienced similar issues.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Cheers

Sorry, as I always state, I am not a mechanic!
With that in mind, could it be something simple like one of your rims has spat a balancing weight? Or would this cause a constant shake irrespective of speed?

Gamfo is right, but also check your tyres for damage, flat spots or "eggs" lumps in your tread and check that you havnt got any damage to your rims, it can happen very easily. Jack em up an give em a spin an look for buckles or flat spots on the rim lip. Hope you get it sorted

thanks maxx. The reason I think its the balance as they are freinds and would expect them to both go to the same place for the Balance, and its the oviuse reason for shakinging over 80 k's

Get the wheels balanced, or get someone who's in the know to check your front end, like John Leffler @ St George steering at Punchbowl.

As Doogie said...the FIRST thing I would suspect is the last thing done...your wheel alignment.

The other thing is maybe you have thrown a weight off a rim.

AAAAAH yes those crappy stick on wheelweights, they have a bad habit of falling off especially if the nuffy who put em on didnt clean the rims good enough

You have 13 x 7s on a spaced drum braked car?

What wheel bearings do you have?

with 13x7 on spacers, I would be looking at the crappy felt bush in the LH side of the rack. With all the extra load it has probably flattened out . With big wheels I always use a nylon or acetal bush and replace the flimsy rack tube with a stronger aluminium one
