Post subject: | Shape of mk2 S airbox? |
Hi all, Searching for an airbox for my '70 S. I had thought that both sides were clipped to the rear, but then saw this: http://tinyurl.com/lrcf27 Is that a correct mk2 box, i.e. with only one clipped corner? Or were both corners in fact clipped? What was the reason for the change in shape? Thanks as always, Ben McC |

Yes the shape of the one in the link is correct, they only had the flat on one "corner". Beware of where you obtain one though, apparently the English ones are thinner than the Australian ones. Cheers Steve |

From what I have been told they clipped one corner for easier access to the washer bottle. One for sale here http://cgi.ebay.com.au/mini-cooper-s-tw ... 7C294%3A50 There was another guy selling plastic reproduction ones too that looked ok. I searched for over 12 months to find one for my 70 s. |

I heard it was to provide clearance for the brake/clutch master cylinders in left hand drive cars. I can't see the washer bottle being so important that it would be the source of such a drastic modification to a key part. |

The answer is the later plastic type cylinders sit up taller than the older metal ones, hence the modification to the air box on MK2 cars. |

Cheers Steve Correct and the GT's had the thinner box according to Ron Williams and the Gt site. |

Hey all, How do you mean when you say "thinner"? Narrower, lower, thinner metal? Just curious..... |

Had a look at the plastic air cleaner on ebay. Another difference I note is that the intake tube sticks down a lot further than the one on the mkI box. Is this another change that was made? Presumably to get down to cooler air past the exhaust manifold? tx, bmc |
