Well,,,,,,, Before i start, i just want to say that i was a total dork, because i drove the moke to the dyno this afternoon & probably shouldn`t have.,, so with that said, what you`re about to read is the proceedings as they happened.

A few weeks ago, after countless hours (literally months & months) of sorting all sorts of small silly problems with all sorts of stupid fiddly things & with me not really being "lap-top computer tune savy" i relied upon quite a few of my professional turbo tuner mates to help out ,,,& they`re all legends & i can`t thank them enough for their time & efforts, knowlege & experience, but after we had it running for quite some time, months & months-- (there is a couple of vids of it running on you tube) i had a small oil leak to sort at the front engine plate ...& also... we had to "perfect" the cam timing. (after working out exactly where it seemed best over the last few months of "Playing".

It was "sort of" time to run her up on the dyno... sooooo,,, with a few more things to sort (but they wer`nt really priority at this stage , just things we can attended to at any later date) we ran it over to our mad mates rolling road dyno .... (name & address withheld until a later date) ... Before we left, Archie & i did a few test runs up & down the street out front here & were pretty dam happy (absolutely & totally stoked would be more accurate) so we strapped in & headed over to the dyno,,, taking it easy, just enjoying the first "Real" long run ,,,, nothing went wrong,,, everything held together,,, no noises,,, no hic-ups,,, just sweet as a button,,, smooth as a babys bottom & just plenty of grunt,,, totally!!!!!!!!! & it "Felt" like it was already perfectly tuned (little did i know--- keep reading)

This thing is "STUPID FAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" ,,, both of us were "ABSOLUTELY" & totally thoroughly impressed ,,,Archie even said that this thing is the fastest mini donk i`ve ever produced & (his words---> """it`s way faster than stewys 1600cc arden crossflow race donk""" ,,, & he`s right,,, this thing absolutely Hammers) & i had not even given it any "real" throttle at this stage (altho i did give it a tad here & there, i couldn`t help myself :-) WRXs have got nothing compared to this thing :-) )

so,,, we get to the dyno,,, stuff around gabbering to all the other knobs that were there,,, & finally hook her up , pull her down & the boys start playing,,, we did a few warm up runs, played a bit with settings & whatever they do with the lap-top thingy.... all seems good , temp is just great,,, oil pressure is wonderfull,,, it`s all smooth & clean ,,, 7lbs boost & climbing each run higher & higher,,, bit by bit,,, & they keep creeping up the revs,,,, constantly playing as they go,,, up & down & round & round ,,,, (i`m just standing there drinking my beam & watching in awe constantly checking water,,, temp but no dramas there at all... . it`s all is sweet as & i`m fully chooffed)

Suddenly it starts roaring & reaching some real revs & some real boost (5500rpms-ish & 10lbs-ish) & the clutch (orange) starts slipping,,, they then back it off, shut it down & turn it all off

I`m like,,, what the!!!!!!!!!!!!! ???????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bugga that,!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!,, run her up again, who cares about a bit of clutch slip ,,,, I`m saying """get the dam mixture right & ignition right & i`ll fix the clutch next week"""... so off they go, again,,, playing & stuffing around & the word is """there seems to be a bit of an over advance problem,,, (they are chasing an ignition advance problem.)

Welll,,, at about 5500-6000rpms & 8-10lbs-ish boost the clutch lets go again,,, the thing spikes up big time & then Pop!!!!!!!!!!,,, breathers gush big spirt of oil & fumes, the engine shuts down & everyone goes "oops"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

............................ ???????????????......................Mmmmmmmm................

Wellllllllll,,,, at 140hp-ish ,,,only 6000rpms & only 10lbs boost ,,, clutch slipping,,, so it`s not really a true representation of it`s grunt... not tuned to anywhere near where it`s supposed to be,,, , seems we have got some piston/ring issues... comp test prooves the internal problemo

all the boys tell me that the damage probably happened on the way over here.

HHhmmmmm,,,,, that would be me & my right foot :-( my bad :-(

so.... I`m a dork & am now about to order a new set of forged pistoniolas,,, & a new double grey diaph & maybe a copper puck plate

sorry for anyone/everyone hoping to see this thing hammer down the road shortly,,, looks like it might take another month or so :-( & a few more $grand to fix

BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the good news is that this thing """IS QUICK""",, It is stupid fast & i really don`t know what i`ve created,,, i`m fully stoked on one hand,,, but a bit bummed on the other

ah well,,, a quick strip down, throw some pistons & a clutch at it & have another go

David Rosenthal,,, i know how you feel now.... i havn`t "Lunched" an engine before,,,, Now i can truely say i have

ya get that on the big jobs i spose

Ok,,,, so,,, this thing is actually set at 15lbs boost,,, the crank is safe at 8000rpms & we will tune it to that,,,, so ,,, in the big scheme of things,,,, there is plenty more to come than 140hp & yep i`m fully stoked,,, If any of you can imagine my feelings right now ,,, the whole time i`ve been developing this thing,,, there`s always been a question in my head, heart & soul as to how much grunt this car will actually have,,, well,,, i`m one happy camper now,,,, it really does have what it`s supposed to.

It Just doesn`t have much compression at the moment :-)

stay tuned :-)

Congratulations....sort of! :D

Sounds like quite a weapon. I'd love to hear it in person!
Do you have any concerns for the life of the gearbox? is it std still?

yeah well,,, it`s all A+ with a 4pin diff & it`s all been overhauled ,,, but it could use a taller diff ratio (we just found out) i did fit a slightly taller one to start with knowing turbo cars like taller f/d ratios to push against, but it can most certainly do with a taller one again,,, it really is blisteringly fast,,, like i said, i`m stoked about how fast it was even before we got to the dyno,,, just sad that i didn`t pick the pinging :-( it`s just melted the piston ring lands down the side of all 4 pistons , & it`s just the roady donk,,, i can`t believe how hard it goes tho,,, it`s farken scarey !!!!!!!!!!!!!

My V8 kombi has lots of grunt & this thing just eats it for breakfast,,, we ran a hot WRX on the way to the dyno , a few times :-) (& yeah i know i shouldn`t have & that`s probably where it started to Sh!t itself) But we just absolutely creamed it,,, over & over again,,, after the third set of lights the WRX driver said (& i quote) """That`s got to be a turbo Vtec yeah? ""

I`m sooo dam sad about it, but sooo elated at the same time,,, the yin-yang i spose

1360cc,,, large journal crank, all balanced with 16v Bimmer head (std) ontop,,, 8.1:1 comp ratio,,, lightened flywheel, oragne clutch (needs double grey :-) ) GT25/28 ball bearing hair drier, my own inlet & exhaust manifold, single 2" throttle body, Adaptronic computer & late celica cam & crank angle sensor type dizzy, coil-over ignitors etc etc,,, some things are flash but other things could be way better.

I wish i videoed the run to the dyno,,, i was a bit busy tho :-)

Matt... very sweet!
I guess something going wrong is the best way to learn, hey.

You can't improve on something unless you know the down-falls.
In your case, it's giving it ""the beans"" before its tuned.

Again, well done and can't wait to see what its like when it holds together a bit better next time! :D

That`s the thing willy,,, i wasn`t really giving it much at all,,, i have never even given it full throttle,,, barely just half & wasn`t even letting it rev,,, they gave it more on the dyno than i did dragging off the Rex

this thing is an absolute weapon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! & i can only imagine what it will have when it is tuned to perfection. It`s definately got WAY more than i`ve ever felt in any mini,,, EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Archie will vouch for me,,, we didn`t need to give it much at all , it just cranks!!!!!!!!!!!!

i can`t wait for my own turbo twinky race donk to be finished now,,, i`m really starting to believe the computer simulator now

MATT my old mate , welcome to the lunch club. I blew 3 up so far.
As I told you in the PM the HP figures were going to be almost spot on.
I was a bit more primative I used the std gearbox and drive , then jambed the brakes on until I could light my cigar of them.

You have done well. forget the lunching and feel bloody proud of what you have achieved.
Funny your pissed , that's what I did every time I destroyed one. Next morning you have a hell of a hangover but you can think clearer.you brain works slower so you can work it all out :D :D :D
As I found , these suckers will rev that quickly to revs that no mini eng should ever do.

OK what pistons did you use. I have ripped Mahels. and Heypertecs to pieces and turned chrome rings into plastic.
Time to look at the whole thing, that's why I stopped until I could sort out all the problems as these engs are going to be awesome.

Suggestion, morris 1100 block, set of either 68mm or 70mm good bike pistons that will take some punishment. a set of steel rods and mains 4 bolts. As for the clutch I will send you some details/drawings on the twin clutch plate alloy flywheel set up. I will get some pics of the taper roller gearbox that I am putting together and when I finish the honda LSD diff as well.
The next weak link I know is going to be the drive shafts ,but I have some made-up to cure that problem.

Feel proud of what you have done and don't let a little blow-up set you back[I hope you did not lunch the head  ]

PS dont drag off anymore WRX's it gives the driver's a inferiority complex

hee hee,,, thanks David,,, you`re truely an inspiration & a major source of encouragment,,, there should be more of you in this world :-)

& i`m not backing off,,, this thing really is stupid fast,,, I`m loving it (maybe too much :-) ) the head is ok thank God,,, the bore only has slight scuff marks which i`m sure will hone out,,, just a set of decent pistons & a proper dyno tune before i put my foot down & all should be well

this is just a roady donk so i`ll stuff a std issue grey clutch in there & i`m pretty sure it will cope as i`m going to cap the boost at 10lbs now, i really can`t see the new owner being able to handle the grunt it`s got , so i`ll be warning him when i take him for his first spin around the block in it.

& yeah,,, i`m not sure i want to wake up tomorow,,, i "Might" wake up at the crack of noon-ish

oops,,, beam is m-p-t,,, best get another :-) we can`t let reality get in the way of a good hang over now can we ??? :-)

Does anyone need any mini parts???,,, almost everything is now for sale,,, i need about $1600 just to cover the new pistons & rings,,, please see for sale section :-)

I'd be happy to have a Moke beat me in the WRX, especially if there's some A series left under the bonnet.
