| Post subject: | Tell me about Pancake Filters |
I bought some pancake filters to give a sporty look to the twin SUs. Haven't measured them but they would be barely 1" thick - Looking at this pic in another thread he has thicker filters. 
So what is ideal for a set of pancakes ( and don't say maple syrup and cream  )

The sports 850 originally had the thinner ones and they worked great . |

Hi David, If you bought them for a sporty look and a slight increase in induction noise, they are spot on! They don't do too much performance wise (bolts through the middle on some models of them, no stub stack to smooth entry of air) but are reasonably unrestrictive. Cheers Matt |

I blame the ones I had on my car for wrecking my engine after 10 months, the rings were rooted.... but then maybe the very very dusty motorkhanas and not changing them when I should have was more to blame before Hay I made some 1.5" long stacks and put unifilter socks over them. The paper filters I used previously were about $17 each and needed to be replaced at regular intervals, whereas the socks I bought were $25 for the pair, and will last indefinitely as long as they're maintained. |

Thinking of getting some K&N filters for them - anyone have an estimate of what they are worth? |

I think about $125 each, ramflo's with unifilter elements end up around $60 each minisport.com.au is good for researching options - as long as you can work out the part numbers, you can go anywhere to order them, they're standard things. My local filter shop could get me anything I wanted as long as I could give them the part number, I'm sure you'd have the same sort of place |

Looking at the Ramflow they show a left offset filter but no right - do you just turn it over to mount the other side? |

no - there's a flange that the foam sits in... but you don't need it offset to the side, just upwards - sometimes |

I use a pair identical to the ones in your photo, assuming that they're the ones that sandwich a doughnut filter between chrome plates with a centre bolt? The elements I now use are A119 Ryco. These are listed for Toranas believe it or not, and can be hard to get off the shelf. Our local Repco gets them in from the warehouse for me. Previously I was using the standard "cooper" units, the small donuts that fit inside the Cooper S twin air filter housing. These are only thin, and I wasn't happy with the original housing (4 hp loss on the dyno even without the filters in it!) Now have more noticeable induction noise, but lots of filter area and very little resistance to flow. That's my two bob's worth. Pottsy |

There not cheap,but easy to maintain-these were $138.00each.

I think the K&N's that LS1380 posted above would be the ultimate filter with a pair of stub stacks installed, but I have a pair of these. 
They take the same A119 Torana air filter but have an integral stub stack to smooth airflow into the carb mouth. They do work well... |

And maybe flow better than the offset ones. |
