Hi,

Looking at getting my first mini and would like to get some direction as to what engine this is? Was curious because owner says 1275cc but the engine number says its a 988cc.

Whats the engine number, looks like a 998,1098,1100 block

could be bored out 100thou to 1290 or something, dependant on pistons, rods, crank etc.

I can't tell from the pics but engine number is for 998..

Could be a dodgy restamp of a 1275 block..

Does it have disc brakes?

How does it feel when you drive it, there is a bit of a difference in power between 1275 and 998. Maybe ask someone nice close by to look at it for you.

Someone will be able to tell what it is from the pics. Looks like small block to me.

Certainly a small bore head (998,1100 etc) as there is no gap between the heater off take and the rocker cover and also no gap between the thermostat and the rocker cover. The longer heads of the 1275 space these out a little further.

Yes it is a small bore as it has the lense type welsh plugs not the cup type that 1275's ones use....Mick is correct in saying it is a small bore head (at a guess i would say its a 12g202)

+.100" bore with a 1098 crank gives you 1188cc.
You can't really get to 1275 with a smallbore block.
1220 is about it (with 68mm pistons if you find any).

Seems like it is just an ordinary 998cc engine and it was the templates of Carsales that didn't allow for the selection.

What do people think of this and the price?

Car has drum brakes all round and no rust.

You will find almost every mini will have rust so make sure you check under the carpets, beaver panel, battery box etc just to be sure.

It looks like a cute little mini but I'm sure someone more knowledgable than me would be more qualified to comment.

Good luck finding a mini! :)

Thanks for the tips.

I originally was chasing a roundnose but they cost a bit more to get on the road. Just wanted something I can immediately drive with minimal work so I can show the world, then work on it as it progresses.

How much potential does the 998cc motors have? I've been reading a lot and have been thinking of putting either a SC12 or SC14 on it as a mate of mine has a SC14 sitting in his garage.
