going gently around a left-hand corner near work this morning and it felt like something in the steering let go, it tried to keep going straight

I got it around the corner and pulled up, switched the engine off and looked over the front end and everything was in place.

I remembered what Doogie said about the last time his diff broke in a motorkhana, he had full drive on one wheel, the car just wanted to go in one direction - same kind of feeling.

I probably shouldn't have, but I started the engine again put it in 1st gear and tried to move it - had drive, no noises, but now it's jammed in 1st gear

bugger! gotta pull it all apart again

You'd better move your bed into the garage as soon as you get home Simon , you know what your wife's reaction to the mini breaking again will be ...

While it doesn't sound good , I've got everything crossed that it will be something simple and not involving tiny pieces of metal that may have found their way into oil galleries .

Hopefully - its "overlocked" in first gear and nothing else. The diff is a different problem.

Box off - sleep in the garage - sorry mate

yep - I'd hoped it would survive past August, dad is going over with Watto and I was going to get him to bring me one...

there was an obscene amount of swarf on the sump plug when I changed the oil before Hay, I expect there's more in there now

You shouldn't go round corners gently in a Mini, what were you thinking?

Unless you have an LSD then a breakage in the diff would normally mean no drive at all. I can't imagine that being stuck in 1st is related, I look forward to hearing the news when you get it apart.

ok, here`s my bet,,, the planetary gears (or one of them) has split into a couple (or a few) bits & one of those bits has flung out of the diff carrier & now jammed into the selector fork thingamyjig
