Post subject:  1204 engine question

Hi,

I've got a 1204 prefixed engine in my Austin. When I bought the engine in about 1994 or 1995 the guy I bought it off said that it was from a Clubman GT.

All the info I've seen since says that this was off an export moke but when I read the latest Mini Experience it mentions that the 1204 was also a replacement GT engine.

Does anybody know any more on this and what the differences between the moke and GT engines were anyway?

In reality it doesn't matter too much as the engine is extensively modified internally but I was just interested.

Thanks,
Simon

Most 1204 engines were the export model moke (1275 with drum brakes  ) , the one I owned many years ago was 1204 1275 (the engine number was the best part of the car) . I'll have to re read watto's article about them also being a GT engine but I thought the later GT engines were 1206 or something ? Hopefully one of the GT boy's (or girls) will help ???

Pinched from www.clubmanGT.com.au

GT ENGINE NUMBER

Early models: 9F/XE/Y##### (produced mid to late 1971) Mk II Cooper S engine. Left over stock from Cooper S?

Other models: 1200/#### ('S' block) and 1206/#### (late GT's with 1100S blocks)

Police GT (SPO28): It has been said that the Police GT had an engine number prefix of 1205/. Also rumoured is a Police prefix of 1207/ (SPO28), 1208/ (Clubman GT Short Engine) and 1209/ (Short Engine SPO28).

The article doesn't mention the 1204 until somewhere near then end (I'll have a look when I get home) and then it says they were a replacement GT engine. Maybe it was a mistake.

Cheers,
Simon

The code system that Leyland used at the time gave each car a set engine prefix and each variation got a new prefix.
If a code was used in a Moke it is very unlikely that the same code was used in a Clubman GT.

My info for the 1204 is Export Moke. The engine would have come with an air pump head.

I figured that it is probably a moke engine but as I said, the guy I bought it off said it was a GT engine and then this month's TME says that 1204, 1208 and 1209 are replacement short engines (page 71, halfway down the 3rd column). My engine came with an AEG 163 so not much pollution gear there luckily. Maybe Watto has the source of that info.

The code covers the spec of the engine including the carbies, compression, fuel pump type, gearbox type, gear ratios, gearchange, emissions, etc.
An export Moke is way different in spec to a Clubman GT. Just about every tick is in the opposite box in my book.

Just out of interest. Would the actual block be any different?

The actual block compared to late GT block (ie 1206/xxxx) wouldnt be any different, still 1275cc and solid chest covers as did the 1100s motor.

1200 Gt block (middle Gt'S) has exactly the same block as a mk 2 cooper s except different no. ie removable chest covers

9f blocks (early GT's) cooper s blocks

I hadnt ever heard of 1204 blocks used for GT's, maybe watto did a typo?? but he will hopefully come on here and explain where he got the info and how he made that conclusion

It seems that the 1204 block was export Moke (going by the posts above), do you have anymore to add to this Watto?

Cheers

According to page 8 of John Smidt's Mini King catalogue 1204 is the prefix for a 1275 cc Moke engine.

if you go to the GT spot (google it) it will tell you most things
about the aussie GT

I was under the idea that the 1200 engine number
was a clubman GT which was actually a cooper s
engine

as it used the special crank

The GT spot is no more, for the time being at least.

Anton no longer has the time to put into the site so it has shut its doors, hopefully not for good.
