Post subject: | EBC Black or Mintex Street brake pads? |
Not much help over on Minimania, so I thought I'd see what the thoughts are here. I've been running EBC Greenstuff pads for about 4 years, but when I got them I lived in hill/ mountain country and they always got warm enough to work the way they should. Now I'm in flat land and the longest I stay on the pedal is 10 seconds to slow down or stop. My EBC Green pads don't stop the car nearly as well when cold as they do heated up, and they almost never warm up enough to perform to their full potential. I've really got to mash down on the pedal to stop in a hurry. I'm looking at either EBC Black pads or Mintex Street pads. EBC run about $45 USD and Mintex $29 USD. Price doesn't matter as much as performance. The most important requirement to me is stopping power when cold. Though brake fade won't be an issue 95% of the time, I'd like something that is fairly fade resistent. EBC Black is supposedly good for very little fade. I don't know about Mintex Street. Keeping brake dust down is a nice extra but not the main concern. Again, EBC is supposedly good for minimizing dust. I don't know about Mintex. I'm running 7.5 discs (Cooper S) setup by the way. Thanks! Craig |

I'll buy EBC blacks for a road car until I can't buy them any more. ![]() I have them in my 1275 LS (8.4"), and loved them. Old pads faded quick, and I can't remember ever feeling them fade. Never took it on track, but we aren't talking about track pads. Compared to a car i've driven with identical brake setup (another 1275 LS) but with greens... you'll love the blacks! I like arriving at the roundabout down the road on a cold morning, brakes cold, and being able to stop! |

i had blackstuffs on unassisted 7.5" discs. they work okay when cold, but faded quickly with fast hills driving. dust wasnt so bad. i wouldnt want them on anything more than a standard or mild 1275. probably either of those pads you mention will do the job |

I had the blacks on my unassisted 7.5 too. They where very very average. Better than standard pads but still faded around hill and were'nt as good as i expected. I then went to greens and they where better. Not a massive difference but i noticed they lasted longer and just braked that bit better. But at the end of the day they stopped the mini. And if i drove sensibly it wouldn't make any difference. |

As I don't really autocross it (maybe 1 time every 2 years), and driving in hilly country happens 3 days out of the year, but I drive fast on local (flat), but curvy roads, the Green pads are under utilized. Believe me, I know how great the Greens are compared to stock pads in hill country, and I would go as far as to say that they saved my life going down a few 12% grade mountain roads. We don't have those roads here, and they just take way too much pedal pressure to get the car to stop when they are always cold. Since I don't have any experience with Mintex, I'll probably just go for the EBC Black. |

I've had blacks in both our cars for road use, with 7.5 S brakes and no servo. I had greens in mine when I used to do track days. If I lived in the mountains I would refit them for road use. For anything else the blacks are fine. If you want the benefits of both, I'd fit greens and a servo. ![]() |
