I've been told that there were some "group 2" mini's which i'm led to believe was produced as a race car? Compared to group 1 which would be a normal road car production.

So i'm just looking for information about it (if there is such a thing), like how many were made and any other info you might have.

Cheers

The different groups were just classes for racing. Works Minis raced in Group 1, Group 2, Group 3, Group 5 and Group 6.

Group 1 = standard touring cars.
Group 2 = modified touring cars.

Basically the higher the number the more mods. When you see photos of a works Mini with alloy wheels or flares it will be running in Group 2 or higher.

They didn't actually build road cars in Group 2 spec. Group 2 was for cars homologated in Group 1 but with more allowed modifications.

Dunno. Is it important? A car may have run one weekend in Group 2 and the next week in Group 1. It was just a matter of changing the wheels and you were no longer in Group 1.

On each weekend in England in the 60s there could have been 10 to 20 events being run. In each of those events there could have been 5 to 30 Minis running in Group 1 or Group 2. So there may have been a couple of hundred cars running in Group 2.

In Australia we didn't follow the Group numbers. We had "Series Production" for standard cars, "Improved Production" for modified cars and Sports Closed (which became Sports Sedans) for very modified cars.

It's not really important, im just curious. I know someone who has an Austin cooper S which he says was built as a group 2 car, and it has all the homologation papers. So i just thought i would ask a bit about it on here to try and get a picture of how special its meant to be.

Thanks for the responses :D

I have all the homologation papers, anyone could buy them.
You didn't need homologation papers to run a car. You needed the papers if you were going to build a car properly. All the papers are is the approved spec for a car in a class. They list all the specs like valve sizes and wheel widths and everything in between. The papers are not related to one particular car.

His car may have been built as a Group 2 car but who built it? It would not have come out of a BMC factory as a Group 2 car. They were all stock cars off the production line and modified later.

An incredible number of mini's must have been raced (in different categories) at some stage so it doesn't really make it rare, unless is has some interesting documented history (i.e. if it was #13 from Bathurst '66 it would be quite interesting :) )

Hope you don't mind if I hijack slightly
Anyone know what Category 2, Group A is?
May be something like prototype sports?

I'll have to ask him more about the car. It's actually my bosses car, but i've never seen it. I don't think its done anything in the last 10 years except get older.

Just so you know my boss likes to tell stories, all the time, and half the time it ends a different story to the one that started. So the facts on the car arent quite clear to me, i normally just sit and nod my head and hope i havent already heard the next story.

That being said, i'm pretty sure he said the car was 1 of 4 that were actually produced as a group 2 car. I will have to ask him about it tommorow to clarify. My information could be totally off the mark, sometimes its hard to pay attention to all the stories when you just want to sit and have a quite lunch :D

I'll get back to you with some clearer info.

Group A was the Australian class of Sportscar racing.
Things like the Matich SR4, Elfin 400, etc. were in Group A. (Group C was Touring Cars.) Yes, Prototype style of Sports Cars.

Category 2 was Sports Cars/Sports Sedans. (Category 1 was open wheel, Category 3 was Touring cars)

CAMS would class the car by the type of racing and then the actual class.
Category 2 means that it was a Sports Car and then Group A was the actual class of Sports Car.
