Post subject: | gauges questions |
I have been doing some searching and Im quite confused. How do I know if I need mechanical or electrical gauges? Or does it not matter? They will be going into this car. http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic ... ight=blown The current speedo has a mind of its own and I want to replace all the gauges with magnolia face. car spec http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=52646 The car doesnt have the supercharger shown in the first link but I am waiting for delivery of a vmax scart kit and want to add a few more gauges. Have these seats on their way too http://www.minispares-online.co.uk/?cat ... rod_id=690 At just over 6ft I am barely able to fit into the current ones. Thanks Jason |

The speedos were always mechanical when fitted to minis. The oil pressure and temp gauges may be electrical or mechanical, it depends only on your preference. Mechanical have relatively delicate pressure lines which will at the least render the gauge inoperable if damaged, and at worst spray oil all over the interior of the car (in the case of the oil pressure sense line) if one breaks. On the plus side, they need no electronic sender unit or electrical cables run (except for the dash light). As they are not electrical, they don't rely on the accuracy of the voltage stabiliser and are simple to install. Electrical gauges exclude the dangers or fragility of the pressure lines in the mechanical gauges above, but will require matching sender units and adapters to suit your motor as well as wiring run from the gauge to the sender. A suitable wire will probably already be there in the case of the temperature gauge. You will have to ask the supplier for the correct sender to match the gauge. |
