I love it! I want it!

Might be heading to Europe for 4-6 months soon and thought I would start looking around for a car to tour in... found this on UK ebay...

Whilst it might not be practicle for travelling around Europe its very cool! Never seen one before.

They call it a Berlkley (replica) made by Austin (apparently)

Does anyone know more about these... were any ever brought out to OZ?

These were built in the 50's I believe, there are some in Aus but don't know if they were privately imported. I think they were originally a 500cc 2 stroke. They are made out of fibreglass. One of my work mates has been restoring/modifying one over the last 10 years or so and is nearly finished. He has fitted a suzuki 800 motor into it. He fitted a mini windscreen to it because he widened the whole car. I'll see if he has any pictures.

As big gig said they were a stand alone car that was often (in the UK) converted to take a mini front subframe and powertrain . They were also availible as a three wheeler at the start of production but most commonly a 4 wheeler . They look pretty good really and would be a nice little package with a mini engine .

If this is a replica and not the real thing then maybe there aren't any in Oz, there are definitely some of the originals around. I believe the majority were fitted with a 325cc twin cylinder 2 stroke, this was then enlarged to make almost a 500cc 2 stoke triple, however there was a further performance version with a 700cc twin cylinder 4 stroke Royal Enfield (motorcycle) engine fitted.

Cheers
Steve

My brother had a drive in one with the 700cc four stroke engine. Said it was the most fun car to drive, as it would hang the back end out on demand, so lots of steering on the throttle.

The one pictured above looks like it needs to be dropped about six inches to have truly great lines.

Looks like fun - but what the heck is that 'steering/shifter lock' anti-theft device... what a spin out (unless im looking wrong..)

what an odd little car!!

it really needs some fat 10" wheels on it and to be lowered... a lot

but is it going to be practical in the Winter Bryan?

Whatever ti is I like it :D

Great link Steve - did you search for that or just knew where to look?

And Simon - we all drive mini's here... practicality went out the window years ago!! But stil Eorupean winter & all that

The web site Steve has a link too above suggests that the mini engine might be the reason it sits so high - surely theres a better way!

Cheers, Bryan

Hi Bryan

I did have to search for it but with the knowledge that it existed as I've been to it before :)

Cheers

For a lot more Mini-based specials, check this site out.

includes the quite attractive Banshee from South Africa.

And New Zealand's De Joux

Even more interesting is this photo, but not for the reasons you think.

Have a very close look, then find out why it's interesting here
