Post subject:  Brakes!!
Hey,

Ive just spent a little while searching but couldnt really find anything. My brakes are not doing what they are meant to be.

I have bled them and there is a solid stream of fluid coming out and yeh i just can not get any peddle at all unless i pump the pedal half a dozen times. Then when i put it on abit of a slope and get a pedal and hold it, after about 5mins it will start creeping forward.

When i replaced the pads, i pulled the calipers apart to push the pistons back in and put it all back together and torqued it up.

So what i was wondering is should i be buying all the seals etc for the calipers, pulling them apart and replacing all the seals? i also thought it may be the master cylinder but im not sure how to check if its buggered or not.

Ive spent the last couple of weekends trying to sort this out and i just dont know anymore so any help would be much appreciated.

if its loosing pedal like that, I would imagine that a: there is air trapped in the system somewhere and you may need to get it pressure bled.

or

if there is no leaks anywhere in the system (check all the lines, slave cylinders etc etc), then it may be the master cylinder or one of seals in the calipers or it may be the pistons them selves.

Check the pedal box for brake fluid.
Check your rear wheel cylinders for leaks (you will need to peel back the rubber cups), shoe thickness and drums.
Check flexible hoses to see if expanding or eggs appearing under pressure
check fittings into flexi hoses for leaks/fluid
Adjust rear shoes as required once rear brakes have been reassembled and deemed ok.

If unable to complete these tasks yourself reccommend taking your car to such places like "the Mini King or Mini Classic" and get them to rectify the problem.
:idea: :arrow: Brakes are not to be mucked around with ....especially if your not 100% sure of what you are doing :!:

Whats the best way to check if the master cylinders rooted? Ive checked the whole system for leaks and i cant find any leaks anywhere.

I think i might see if i can get a mobile mechanic out to have a look. But yeh like BALLISTICs said i wanna get the brakes right

Best way to check is to pull it off and pull it apart.

Presuming you have a single system MC, all you need to do is
undo the pipe coming out of the MC,
take the clevis pin out from where the brake pedal connects to the MC pushrod inside the car (should have a little clip or split pin stopping it from coming out) and
undo the 2 nuts holding the MC to the car.

Then you can either dismantle it yourself (follow a workshop manual for that), or take it to a brake shop/mini mechanic or anyone you want to give it to.

Or u could pump it till u get pressure and hold it there for a while if it starts to go down its is no good or u have a leak in your line some were

Testing and bleeding Brake Master Cyl. Remove brake line from Master Cylinder and fit Bleed nipple in it's place. Pump and bleed cylinder on it's own and see if it will now hold perssure. If you have the same fault as you had before tou know that the Master cylinder is the culprit. You should get a pedal as hard as a rock.

Hey,

I had a play with my brakes this arvo and i put a bleed nipple into the master cylinder and i got a rock hard pedal so im guessing the master cylinder may be ok. I also pulled the caliper of one side and pulled it apart and to make sure it wasnt blocked and make sure there wasnt any leaks in around the piston which there wasnt. So my only idea is theres a leak somewhere.

And that could be in a multitude of places.
Lines could be rubbing somewhere & created a hole.
or a flexi line could have done the same.
Stripped thread somewhere?
Ball not seating right in the hole somewhere?

Who knows where it might be! :cry:

If you are not actually losing fluid anwhere, the pedal going down slowly when held a while is most likely a tiny score mark in the MC, allowing fluid to bypass the main piston seal.
I had that problem once.

Oh ok well is there away of telling if it has a crack? And where it is? I just don't want to buy a new one if its not broken and I have to pay big money to something else to get fixed. But yeh thanks for the help

Master cylinder won't be cracked. The marks are usually caused by corrosion.
I'd hone it (with a brake hone) inspect it with a light and fit another new set of seals.
If any marks are still there, either get another cylinder, or get yours sleeved with S/S by a brake shop.
