Post subject: | How to remove a Clubman steering wheel ????? |
I have tried to remove my 74 Clubman steering wheel and it seems to be held on ( apart from the main nut ) by two very, very, very tiny screws I cant get at, I have a jewellers screwdriver but its too short, I am extremely reluctant to use any force due to the good condition of the steering wheel. Anyone able to identify the tool for the job ? |

The wheel is only held on by the big nut on the end of the steering collumn , often it will be very tight and you'll need a puller of some form (try and resist belting it with a hammer) . |

Thanks for that but first I need access to the nut and the cover holding the emblem is over it and those very, very, very tiny screws are holding onto it. Anybody able to identify the tool for the job ? |

What type of wheel is it ? The one with the big triangularish shaped bit in the middle or the one with the big round leyland badge in the middle ? I thought both tyres just levered out though but it's year's since i've taken off the earlier triangular type |

Can't help you with getting the cover off a clubby steering wheel but the nut should be the same as the Hub nuts I use a 34mm socket can't for the life of me remember the imperial size ![]() ![]() |

Okay, do you have any sort of gear puller? It sounds like you're going to need mechanical force rather than brute force. You will need to use bars or something behind the wheel to apply the force to the wheel, while the puller winds in against the central steering column. You may need to get a bit creative, so look around for tools. Gear pullers are useful and inexpensive. <deleted advice about leaving the nut on - beaten to the punch!> I don't think the small screws you describe are related to holding it on, but I can't picture what you're describing. |

There is the cover with emblem in it over the main nut I have looked at how its attached and its with very, very, very tiny screws I cant get at. I do not want to use brute or mechanical force to remove the cover due to the condition of the steering wheel I understand fully the process once I remove the cover but the cover has to removed first in order for me to get access to the main nut. |

well you could always drill out the screws and then re tap them and put new screws in after just slightly bigger ones, |

I can't recall any screws but I don't know which wheel you have (There are three different wheels fitted to flat front Minis) If it is the type of cover I am thinking it justs pulls off. Is it the wide soft cover with the little Leyland badge in the middle? The book says to pry the cover upcarefully with a screwdriver. My trick for removing steering wheels, I learned this when I was working in a wrecking yard and it works on every car I have tried since... You undo the nut (and throw it over your left shoulder*) then you play the bongo drums on the outer edge of the wheel. You whack the crap out of it downwards, don't bang both hands at once, go leftrightleftrightleftright as quick and as hard as you can. After about 20 hits you will find the wheel is loose. *well I did say I was working in a wrecking yard. ![]() |

maybe a pic will help. If it is tiny screws that are holding the cover on, then you need to remove these screws (not trying to be a smarty), so either you need better fitting screwdrivers or try loosening them with some wd40 etc. I don't really have any other advise for removing screws. |
